Honestly, seeing people find out in the wild that New York City has giant mounds of trash bags ten feet high along every sidewalk in the city three or four times a week is one of the great pleasures of the internet. Yes, the entire city. Every trash day. Looks like this. For real, not a joke.
hang on, sorry, are you telling me the city of new york’s solution to trash to date has been to just have people dump bags of trash out openly? how the fuck do your trash trucks work, like, are the operators loading bags in by hand??

I do like Hollande, though, very under-rated policy-wise. Facing a difficult economy, he balanced the books by raising taxes rather than cutting welfare. His minister of the economy successfully advocated for loosening the noose on the Greek economy. He was also the most anti-Assad Western leader.

The disappointed faces of the RN politicians is making my night. Boo it's so unfair that despite a large minority of the voters liking them, everyone else hates them and is willing to join forces to defeat them.

Looks like the French still believe in their Republic! NFP (left) first, with Ensemble (Macron) and RN almost tied in 2nd place, with a slight advantage for Ensemble.

The "Ukraine never in NATO" crowd seems to think they're avoiding confrontation with Russia, but they're actually encouraging Russia in a confrontation that's well underway. Events are past the point where "don't make Russia nervous, don't push back, or they might get aggressive" becomes denial.

(Another note on the prior tweet: The Inrerior Minister is also responsible for organizing elections, so…) —Attal and Macron have had “glacial” relations since Macron’s decision to call elections. We’ve known Attal didn’t know about it till just before public announcement.

2. Labour held steady in total votes, but combined with the fractured vote on the right, won a historic parliamentary majority. This is in line with trends elsewhere in Europe. The far right rises and wins when the center-left atomizes (Italy, France) and falls short when it holds (Spain, Portugal).

It is funny that it's simultaneously true that you can simultaneously say this ends one of the longest periods of government for a century, and also that the last 5 general elections all resulted in a change of government (Lab>Con/LD>Con>Con/DUP>Con>Lab)

is there any version of ‘far right’ that doesn’t embrace corruption
Brazil’s Federal Police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association in connection with undeclared diamonds the far-right leader received from Saudi Arabia during his time in office, according to a source with knowledge of the accusations.

Got reminded today that LFI's leader for this election (Manuel Bompard) is the one that was bragging about his party being more of an assholr to Ukraine than RN. It does hurt to endorse such a toxic bunch in any way, but it's the only choice in districts where the alternative is RN.

He tries to make it about his "one vote", his own private decision of whether to vote or not. Except he's not having an idle shower thought, he's writing in a newspaper, presumably with the intention of influencing "hundreds" (at least) of potential voters.

People are quite unenthusiastic about the incoming Labour government with Keir Starmer as prime minister, but I think Keir is good. First, if he is 'boring', so what? (Boris Johnson wasn't boring and neither is Trump.) Second, Keir is an avowed and open YIMBY, and the UK really needs that.

Above all, Orbán seems nervous. The Sovereignty Protection Office he set up to go after his enemies has started doing just that, going after the HU chapter of Transparency International. This is a very distressing development but also a sign that something is shifting in HU. 11/

French elections: the question now is the endorsements from the Macron-aligned camp (Ensemble) for the left candidates in districts where the left is in a better position to beat the far right. 1/2

Good news, Gabriel Attal (Macron's PM) is endorsing voting for the left, including LFI*, in the districts where they're ahead, in the name of unity against the far right. The asterisk* is the races where there's a really unsavoury LFI candidate.
French elections Bad news: far right RN is ahead in the first round, with 34% Good news: basically all left-wing parties (28%) have already called for voting against RN when their candidate is eliminated or has no chance of winning Bad news: mainstrean right LR (10%) refused to endorse anyone.

There's a misunderstanding. This is NOT the Georgian Dream that needed to be crushed.

People rightly pillory consultants like McKinsey for the dross they pump out. ("The metaverse is worth $1 trillion! Source: my arse") but there's equally a whole cottage industry of NGOs pushing out nonsense to flatter the prejudices of their donors.

Residents of Beach Resort Town complaining about tourists is just like Brusselers complaining about eurocrats. Sure, if you kick them away rents will be much lower but you also won't have an economy. You still won't be able to afford the rents or you wouldn't choose to live here in the first place.

Restricting immigration when you're at full employment has got to be destroying value, right? Like, not only reducing GDP, but also GDP/capita?
