We are trying to organize the office at work this week, and today included hours of opening crates to discover caches of small plastic animals. It also included opening a box to discover a single plastic orca that was A FOOT AND A HALF LONG. Wonders all around us!!

Libraries are dynamic institutions. A library without staff is not a library, but a building with some static collections in it. Library workers make libraries! They do all of the work to manage & build resources, provide services to connect people to what they seek, maintain infrastructures! 📚📜
A library is more than its collections or physical spaces. It’s the people who make the library a robust site of inquiry and discovery. For shame

Am I more proud of the story we made for @nomgpodcast.bsky.social, or the fact that it could inspire a Spock reaction gif? Por que no los dos?
Well, that's my heart absolutely broken into a million pieces after the season finale of @nomgpodcast.bsky.social's "Cassilda's Song, Chapter 4." It's going to take a while to recover, I think.

John is right, this is fucking amazing and I demand a recount.
The Bulwer-Lytton Awards for Worst Opening Paragraph went out and, man, I totally disagree. This opener is hilarious.

I love everything about this essay, including loving Farscape.
I love Farscape so much I am now trying to make the case that it will save you from despair in election season -- which, in fairness, it totally will my latest for @reactorsff.bsky.social reactormag.com/watching-far...

Was not expecting the erotic charge in the Olympic track and field commentators’ remarks as soon as they saw a shot of the discus racks.

The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943. Only one cat has ever received the award. This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25

Truly only capable of doing maybe three big things a day during the worst summer heat, and although we didn’t break 100F here today, I can already tell I am donezo for the rest of the day.

I don’t say much about the church part of my church job for many reasons, but I subbed in at a different denomination today and boy howdy. It felt like coming out of a dark room and into such a warm and welcoming one. OOF LET’S NOT PROCESS THAT ONE, FRIENDS, I’m back at my regular church next week!

No. Either embrace Death Of The Artist, and the fact they've been exposed as shitty doesn't matter to you to enjoy the work, OR forsake the work. Don't engage in sophistry with the works you like, pretending they weren't involved, so you can skate by on some sort of moral technicality.

No one should be surprised that the first Olympic event I’m watching live is an equestrian one.

This is very last minute but I’m looking for data on mystery novel sales in the 1920s and 1930s: how much shelf space did they take up at bookstores, how many were sold annually, how much money did the sales produce? I know I’ve seen it before but I can’t find it.

My game night got canceled, and so I carried out my favorite summer tradition of watching random older movies I’ve somehow not seen before. Tonight’s feature: The Abyss.

Just ate a truly great nectarine, which brought me right back to an excellent joke in Peter David’s TNG novel Q-in-Law, the same as it has since I was a teenager. If you didn’t know, PAD has been recovering from gnarly medical issues for a long time, and still needs help. gofund.me/e1ac3cb0

If dispelling doom for the sake of dispelling doom does not appeal to you, perhaps try dispelling doom out of spite, is what I’m saying.
If it’s not helpful to you, by all means ignore this, but I’m just saying… It really helps me to recenter myself to think “Oh right. The worst fucking people on the planet want me to feel like we’re doomed. Fuck those guys, actually.”

For a while now I have had this icky feeling that a lot of our use of AI is us just using it to find examples to show each other how bad AI is and TBH I think we should probably all stop doing that cause excessive energy consumption doesn't differentiate between real use and joke use. 😬
