On July 12, an incident led to the implementation of a combined automated and human filtering system for user handles. This letter to the community describes what happened and what we’re going to do moving forward:

"This was the first report of this account after it changed its handle, and was followed by approximately 700 more reports."
Seven hundred. Oh heavens.
This report mentions that you're expanding the T&S team. I'd love to send some former colleagues your way - when will you be adding T&S job postings to the jobs site?
How about "we're sorry for not considering a wide range of people in advance of developing any code at all since the only thing that's going to make this a fun place to hang out is people feeling comfy to be funny and talk about everything under the sun w/o having to be wearing armor just in case?"
Read the last reply in the screenshot to get an idea of the problem. Neither "We're sorry" or "We apologize" are enough until they specifically address what they're apologizing for, to who, and how they will move forward so it won't happen again
Reminding white ppl that this isn't your apology ("apology") to accept
I don't wanna see whites saying "we accept your apology" or arguing with black people on how they should accept, get that shit out of my face this isn't about you
so three of these posts are obviated by the text in the link which you haven't read, and the fourth one is just whining about how it didn't meet your own personal criteria. have you considered that they are not addressing you, specifically
Oh I read the link.
And I can tell Loud and Clear they aren't addressing me nor friends. They're just trying make all those who already resemble themselves believe that they're "appeasing" those unruly ppl who've been angry at crap behavior permitted w/o consequences.
2 weeks for this bland assembly of platitudes and excuses is a pretty shitty look. I think y'all are still struggling to understand how the issues y'all have are in the foundation and extend far beyond the instance of an account using a slur as a name.
I'm glad you are releasing timelined reports for transparency, this is useful. Thank you for making some steps forward here to support the communities that need it most.
It's not that straightforward - e.g. like this case. This is of course a very edge case, these won't happen very often, but the point is simple keyword banning alone is not enough.
Pretty sure this person is a racist troll, but there's plenty of very obviously real examples. Like I once had to figure out to have a slur filter let through Kike Hernandez, and that type of patch wouldn't work for a platform that wants to encourage non-English communication.
Yeah I stand corrected - this one is most likely done on purpose. But you're right, there're plenty of real examples.
Also it's pretty easy to bypass keyword filters by alternative spelling or or non-latin alphabet. This is why Twitter never caught me when I told some asshole to "gо fuсk уоursеlf"
Yes, THIS is the actual Scunthorpe Problem: it’s a filter issue, not a banning issue. Lots of poseurs have been throwing the term Scunthorpe around like they know what it means when they clearly do not.
I remember back in the day a Rock Band player noted they couldn't use "Four Horsemen" as a band name because it contained "semen" and the swear filter caught it
I had never noticed before that
It was always a good time on EverQuest's message boards back in the day when people talked about fighting ****atrices
Still, I don't think it would be unreasonable for Dani not to use her middle initial 😬
Ha, yes I was. I remember the day the letter e got in the bad word filter. People were getting logged off and didn’t know what the hell was happening. I wrote an email to the admins very carefully, it still took several tries.
