We now have rooks, jackdaws, starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, and assorted thrushes/sparrows fighting over the copious amounts of food my neighbour puts out. The dawn chorus has reached a real crescendo, and the squabbling is quite something.

I'd argue (from a lowbie POV) it's difficult because if you set the number of likes too high, all you see are replies to/from large accounts. Meaning we see more of the Discourse, which potentially drives bad behaviour.

We may not see the toxic replies, but we see the replies to those replies and BOOM. Same difference.

Threading here is awful, I've now seen your reply on proportional visibility based on account size and yes, that'd be a good start!
