This is easily the best series I've read this year

I can tell Betty is dealing with extra anxiety this week by the number of times I've found toys in the water bowl. (I was working on site more than usual.)

Well I can tell the humidity is back. Cleaning the litter boxes and floors is extra sweaty today🥵

no, that's ok, I appreciate the offer though!

what I thought was OA turns out to be behind a paywall and would require ILL, so now I am a sad panda (I have time to read it today. That's going to change by the time it would arrive.)

Has anyone read Martin MacInnes and if so, which book should I start with?

Trad publisher's ebook pricing is very silly. You want me to spend that much to borrow this book until you decide to pull it for whatever reason, when I could instead get the print for basically the same price and also lend it to friends or sell it or read it 10 years from now? Please.

“The things that go viral about a community should come from that community” is such a straightforward, excellent, but against-the-grain idea
I am stumbling across the same meme about "the g word" (gypsy) from a person I like a great deal, actually, but they are NOT Roma/Sinti/Traveller and the meme about not using the G-Word oversimplifies things and makes me wish the things that went viral about communities CAME from those communities.

new Premee Mohamed! new Ann Leckie! new Bora Chung! the Kitasei and Chandrasekera and Older and MacInnes look amazing!
Round two of this year's best SF books is up at Esquire! I love these summer books for a lot of reasons, including how they stretch the bounds of science fiction in a lot of ways I think it needs stretching. (Covers are from the spring picks, but the summer books are at the top of the list!)
The Best Sci-Fi Books of 2024 (So Far)www.esquire.com This year’s best sci-fi outings are full of questions about how we might live differently with each other, on our troubled planet or in the furthest reaches of space.

There is a big part of me wondering if this is BN trying to navigate obscenity statutes like § 18.2-384 in Virginia. Which was found unconstitutional by one judge, but GOP run state legislatures are going to keep pushing. This voluntary compliance is so much BS and is going to hurt us.

For the longest time I thought it was two tractors playing tug-rope. I was so disappointed when I learned what it really is 😂

When you're an LGBTQ+ kid growing up in America, one book in which you see your life reflected can save you from self-harm. This mountain of books thrown in the trash by the GOP ideologues who have ruined New College of Florida is bone-chilling to see. www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/e...

Gen X hasn't "become" reactionary. There were always plenty of reactionary gen xers. It's not aging that "turned them" into reactionaries. I grew up with a bunch of reactionaries of my generation. They are the same in middle age.

anyone have recs for articles about that sort of common, subtle gender bias that happens in liberal spaces (eg, academic libraries)? you know, where it's not sexual harassment, it's a subtle and ongoing pattern of demeaning or being paternalistic toward or not listening to women?

the only things I can find are about specifically librarians in formal leadership or instructional roles but I can't find anything at all about rank-and-file library workers including staff, so am now expanding my search to include all of higher ed
