Not the main point, but the industrial strength metonymy is surreal: 'content', that may be 'high quality', 'comes out of' 'jobs' which are just somehow 'there', but need not be. What is this content? whose quality? how did those jobs get there? does anyone do them? All the people have disappeared.

I've argued for a while, mostly in the context of "car hits pedestrian", that we live in an age of metonymous weapons.

I don't have any specific references; this was simply a foundational lens throughout my undergrad education in English + media studies: looking at passive constructions, framing, how headlines ascribe agency, etc.

I think this is one of the main points: these folks desemanticize and instrumentalize "creativity," "intelligence," "reason," "content," "quality," etc.

With apologies to James C Scott much of this is "Seeing Like an MBA" which is dumb but I don't really mind.
