I must guiltily report that I just visited my favorite galleries again and did not make an effort to find The Hidden Galleries (19th century European furniture.)

I spent a very long time staring at this miniature of Alexander fighting Darius, and now I would like you, too, to notice the poor dude who was violently separated from his arm. (His helmet is also lying on the ground elsewhere in the painting.)

MINIATURES. the scale is hard to convey, but this had to be painted not just with a single-hair brush by a FINE single hair.

This is from a Safavid manuscript produced in Herat in 1524-1525.

speaking of exquisitely fine work: an Egyptian funerary statue from the 19th dynasty.

I will say that one weird thing about visiting the Met specifically is that they have so many one-of-a-kind items that my “this isn’t real” spidey senses are constantly tingling.

I needed to have a good long sit at about that point in my museum journey, so I had a great time staring and staring and staring. I do wish they had put a jeweler’s loop on a chain for me to use. look at these fun folks in the corner!
