Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

It's because they want to privatize weather. They tried doing it under his last administration but many people didn't really notice beyond the weird hurricane drawing he did. It's also why they cut (or at least tried to it's been a minute since I read that stuff) a bunch of NASA Earth's funding too
They have such winning ideas like “why don’t we charge people who want to know if that tornado is gonna hit their house.”

“Heat pumps don’t work when it’s cold.” I often read in articles written by people who never had a heat pump. How come that most heat pumps per capita are installed in coldest countries? Hint: the claim is incorrect. My article for @carbonbrief.org here👇 www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-18...

This is Sylvia Gonzalez. At age 72, she won an upset victory for city council after campaigning to oust the city manager. The mayor didn't like that. So he had her arrested & jailed. The Supreme Court is about to hear her case, which has largely gone unnoticed. A thread.

The way forward is mutual aid. Feel lost, lonely, scared? There is a free fridge project or pantry near you. Make some sandwiches. I am absolutely not kidding about this. “Not Knowing What Else To Do, Woman Bakes American-Flag Cake” is not terrible advice if you give it away.

it's important for outlets to explain that when we talk about AI "posing a threat to humanity," we're talking about the rushed implementation of half-cooked automation killing your grandma with an auto-rejection of her medicare claims, not sentient industrialized planet-scouring murderbots (for now)
UnitedHealth uses AI model with 90% error rate to deny care, lawsuit allegesarstechnica.com For the largest health insurer in the US, AI's error rate is like a feature, not a bug.

you're waiting for the climate catastrophe, here it is. grids downed in cities with infrastructures gutted by corporate greed and overtaxed by rising temperatures. people boiling alive in their homes. we'll probably never know how many people die in Houston over this next month due to this hurricane

Personally, I hate tech because in 2010 shared a table with a dev at Epoch in Austin who a) was reading a book on hypnotism, b) told me he doesn't tip baristas because "they don't do anything" and c) asked for my number immediately after I said "if you can't tip, make your own coffee at home"

THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

Had my day of despair today, but I also got to see the unveiling of the new in-line charging station for RIPTA's R Line. I wonder when the right people will note the connection between high ridership and frequency (R has the highest ridership in the state and allegedly arrives every 10 minutes 🤔)

Pride BEGAN during a time of anti-sodomy laws. The first Pride was a riot against those laws. Pride is celebrated around the world in places where it is much more dangerous to be queer than here. Pride is not dependent on being ALLOWED to be who we are, it’s a promise that we WILL be no matter what
I hope we all enjoyed our last Pride month in the US. Project 2025 will put an end to it

Last week, I visited a certain island community in my state, to meet with people who deal with the consequences of sea level rise there. The fact that only a community activist would openly discuss the need to move further inland was unsurprising.
