Don't know about the environment, but wouldn't it be a triumph of ecumenical syncretism if doing Diwali on Stonehenge un-hexed the moon?

27,000 Virginia teachers have unionized, part of a public-sector labor push in what remains a private-sector right-to-work state. As Harold Meyerson notes, with Virginia’s low rate of unionization "the victory will increase the # of Virginians working under a collective bargaining agreement by 12%"
Teachers in the South Go Unionprospect.org Today on TAP: It’s not just autoworkers who are unionizing in the non-union South. In Virginia, schoolteachers are successfully organizing, too.

I try not to spend all day every day mad about it but it is so disgusting that my seven-year-old has to learn to hide from spree murderers because of soulless gunhumpers with rocks for brains

I teach at CUNY. And I assure you , the repression of pro-Palestinian speech on our campuses is coming at the direct orders of our Democratic governor. The president of my college said so herself, in so many words.

People say it's impossible for Dems to create party discipline, but they are amazing at getting the rank and file to toe the same line about why action was, is, and probably should be impossible.

The way conservatives talk about and understand this issue is essentially imaginary, a problem that happens on their television screens. Trying to "solve" it in a way that assuages their concerns is like passing a law to try to outlaw the fake drugs from law and order svu
There is no amount of increasing border enforcement or deporting people that will ever make the American right wing believe the border is being properly handled by a democratic president. Any compromise on this is just a signal that they can demand more & keep the issue live. Immoral, bad politics.

The New York Times could be running a weekly “university president refuses to resign” story about Gordon Gee and WVU or Richard Corcoran at New College in Florida, but they aren’t.

I think in a lot of cases - on Afghanistan and especially on the economy - Biden has been treated unfairly by the media, but the predictable way in which his strategy on Gaza has been unpopular on both the left and right is entirely on him.

I read this and thought, "Hundreds OF thousands? Is that a typo??" It is not: "roughly 240,000 Mississippians were barred from voting as of the 2022 midterms; that’s nearly 11 percent of the state’s voting-age population, the highest rate in the nation." Jesus.
Mississippians go to the ballot next week to elect their governor and other officials. But hundreds of thousands of residents with felonies won't be among them, as the state bars them from voting for life:
After “Glimmer of a Moment,” Mississippi Once Again Shuts Out Aspiring Votersboltsmag.org As the state votes next month, many residents with past felony convictions remain barred from voting for life even though a federal court ruled in August that the practice is cruel, unusual, and racia...

The "People who are calling for a ceasefire don't have an answer for how to deal with Hamas" line annoys me because people calling for indiscriminate bombing certainly don't either -- they are just pretending to, even though their solution is counterproductive.

Has anyone thought about scraping the entire Twitter social graph? I bet it would make onboarding people to new social networks a lot easier.
