really, most stories about someone being a good religious person in a secondary world are pretty terrible. we like stories like job, where you're mad at god but trying to figure out how to go along with it. jedi can't do this kind of story because it's incredibly easy to fail at being a jedi
there was exactly one interesting jedi, and it was obi wan in the first star wars, and ever since then every story that has focused on For Reals Jedi has sucked because jedi are extremely boring. we can do stories about becoming a jedi or quitting being a jedi, and that's it.
They’re based on Kurosawa’s samurai films — where’s the Jedi version of Miyamoto Musashi, a guy who never actually pledges fealty and instead just wanders around, getting into duels and righting the occasional wrong?
this guy was in an interesting story about someone who is faithful to his code, though the story wouldn't have worked without a lot of complications around the code
Meanwhile *this* guy was in an interesting story about someone who cheekily manipulates others’ bad-faith assumptions that he will adhere to a prescribed social code, when in fact he is actually using them as a means to a more benevolent end.
