The loss of so much in Jasper is a catastrophe, and it's one that the UCP has fanned with successive, systematic cuts to wildfire response. slashed budgets (including water tanker planes), firefighter training, and the number of fire lookout towers. a world class rapid response team was cut entirely

As someone on the other side of the contract desk, I appreciate it when authors ask questions and push back. My company can't always accommodate all the requests; but having authors informed as to what they're heading into is WAY more my preference.

I'm seeing folks signing terrible contracts with small presses. TERRIBLE contracts. I'm talking holding short stories exclusively for years for pennies. What's the reversal rights? "Oh just ask them, they're really nice. Story time about "really nice" Get comfy b/c this will be a journey

This! Usually some questions and pushback is expected. And generally an editor wants you to know what you're signing because it's going to be less grief for THEM in the long run if everyone is clear on terms (I worked acquisitions--believe me, I wanted folks to understand what they signed!).

Going to pull this one out (SORRY FOLKS I WILL STOP I PROMISE) I actually don't mind that a lot of small pub runs on volunteers. I have volunteered early in my career and I have no regrets for having done it. Wonderful contacts + experience. BUT if you are in a paid position? You need to be paid.

Thread. "But they're so nice" does not fucking matter. Contract language is what matters. Also gonna bring up TGoF: "Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction, it is not a character trait." A lot of people are "nice". Doesn't mean you want to do business with them.

I see a lot of authors doing "I publish with X because they're so nice." And hey, I do it, too - @tychebooks.bsky.social is nice! Lovely! Also, always pays me on time. Has excellent & clear contract terms. Always hustling for her authors. Did you notice the business lines there? 🧵

great thread~ "Oh just ask them, they're really nice!" Ask them to put it IN THE CONTRACT. If they're nice enough for you to appeal to them directly, but not nice enough to put it in the contract...that's the business equivalent of nice to you but not the waiter.
