Oh weird you mean it was a net revenue generator all the millionaires didn't flee the state like they said they would wow that's crazy
The Massachusetts "millionaires tax" has vastly surpassed projections, bringing in more than $1.8 billion in revenue so far this fiscal year — with the prospect of a surplus of hundreds of millions of dollars to spend on transportation and education
State’s ‘millionaires tax’ has already generated $1.8 billion this year, blowing past state projections - The Boston Globewww.bostonglobe.com The estimated haul is already $800 million more than what Governor Maura Healey and state lawmakers planned to spend from its revenue in fiscal year 2024.

This could have been California but instead we have to cut food stamps this year

THIS COULD BE US BUT NEWSOM IS PLAYING
Avatar
This could be us in Massachusetts where this is already us but Healey will just find a way to give it all back in a tax refund

Gotta cut the estate tax to keep all the dead millions from leaving!
Avatar
Oh don't worry Healey cut rich people's taxes in other ways so we're still fighting about what programs to cut and school districts across MA are facing major deficits.

Rich people are like a sponge. They just suck up everything and hold on to it. Sure some wealth will trickle down, but everybody knows that you have to squeeze them.
Avatar
Yup. The more hoarded wealth they have we force back into circulation, the better off we'll all be.

A US state recently voted to raise the taxes for those who earn more than 1 million $ by 4% and immediately increased their cashflow by over 1 bill. If I remember correctly, but it was a lot.

One thing that really irritates the hell out of me is when nobody responds to that scenario in the following manner: "Oh really? Rich people will flee the state if you raise taxes? Tell me... where the fuck would they go?"
Avatar
Oh you're gonna leave? Where ya gonna go, Arkansas? Sure.
This is a distinction vs California. Anyone who is rich in Mass has at least thought about leaving already.
Avatar
Unfortunately, the answer tends to be New Hampshire. But commuting doesn't work for everyone.
Avatar
Didn't flee 'yet' and that's fine. Other states will learn from MA how much they can squeeze and soon there'll be nowhere for them to go. That's the dream anyways...
Avatar
What's wild is that they think the threat of leaving is something to be scared of. The super rich are always a net drain on any economy they're part of; even if this tax didn't raise revenue and millionaires left the state, it would be a win.

Next they'll tell us that raising the state minimum wage won't make all the businessmen go Galt like they threatened,
Avatar
I wish they would. I'm pretty sure they'd learn pretty quickly that it's the capital their businesses need, not them.
Avatar
They all wanted to but they just couldn’t bear to give up those 2% mortgages, right?
Avatar
Almost as if the rich have soo much money they don’t actually miss a bit of it

Billionaires are mobile but millionaires' source of wealth is often local (as I understand it). They're the "local gentry".

To be fair the Red Sox lost some bidding wars as while their package was higher, the take home post tax was lower than other teams. Does that public education still seem like a good idea knowing the Sox don't have a True Ace Pitcher? Huh does it now?

I live in the same county as Bill Gates. No income tax in WA, but he presumably pays local property tax.

Gavin Newsome, are you listening?

Weirdly, when increasing chunks of the country are openly dystopian (dystopic?) people are willing to pay for the privilege of not living in them.
