Aren’t the same people freaking out about Biden the ones perfectly happy to weekend-at-Bernie’s Feinstein — or play along with that — as long as they could? This is a genuine question; I don’t know.

Her seat was CA, where in the first round she got 44.2% to the highest R candidate (who came in third) getting 8.3% tho.
Avatar
Which is perhaps to say, the freakout is also highly driven by how close the race is
Avatar
Oh yes, definitely. Eh. I’m not freaking out about Biden; I am freaking out about the press, the pundits, the donors, and especially the campaign. This seems to me to be the You Have One Job of a campaign and that they can’t manage it scares me. It’s not a surprise!

Right. And folks can (and plainly do) have lots of opinions on what to do now, but the overriding concern here, and in the D party apparatus isn't "will Biden be ok in the Oval Office" but "is his campaign going to get him there" and if not, can we fix it, and can someone else fix it, in that order
Avatar
Yeah. I’m mostly just noting the hypocrisy. Which — I am well aware doesn’t really matter! But I like to try to understand the processes.

I didn’t much like Biden and never liked the primary system. I thought he was too old in 2020! But the time to fix it was before the primaries. I don’t have the impression that he’s changed much, only the world, both in very predictable ways.

Also “we f’ing told you running this guy again was a huge risk when he set himself up perfectly to be a gracious one term president and now we are working through some very understandable rage at the dem party leadership”
Avatar
Sure, replacing Biden will work, because it'll be a completely different media covering a completely different campaign run by completely different people! /s Retreat, give in, never fight back, apparently, is the Democratic party creed.

The campaign and his team, they could perfectly well run a “Biden is the Roosevelt of our time and the elderly respected statesman we need in these dire times, don’t worry about his health and age, he has the best team and VP behind him” campaign.
Avatar
But they don’t do that and currently no one would believe the “best team behind him” bit anyway.

I never understood the drive to keep her in place. It’s not like the Senate seat was going to flip. She should have retired with dignity instead of running again in 2018.

The precinct by precinct vote share map for that general was some real sickos shit. KDL’s main base of support was deep R areas spite voting against Feinstein.
Avatar
I don't think so? Like, D members of the house weren't really involved in the Feinstein situation, but are very concerned about the current situation
Avatar
It's not really clear to me which D senators were fully cognizant of what was actually happening with Feinstein, but you're not looking at a lot of folks. Senior staff can handle /a lot/ of stuff
Avatar
Thank you! The potential parallels/hypocrisy seemed interesting (to me, I know hypocrisy doesn’t matter) but don’t seem to apply.
Avatar
No I found both situations equally horrifying. I don't want to accuse a whole generation of being like that but what the actual fuck. This is not normal adult behavior, they are like children.

Are you a major donor, a national or CA opinion columnist, or highly ranked in the state or national Democratic Party apparatus?
Avatar
Eh, Team Pelosi considers me more of a troublemaker. Does that matter? According to reporting, major donors are seeing the same thing that me and the rest of the people saying the same thing all see.
Avatar
You did not understand the question I was asking. Goodbye.
Avatar
Can't speak for others, maybe some overlap, but I was definitely very against what happened with Feinstein. But that was primarily her inner circle, with more acquiescence than active encouragement from the party. And just the bottom line that a Senate seat matters a lot less than the White House.
Avatar
It was gross and bad. It's also been a recurring thing in the Senate since forever. The name does after all derive from "old man," and lots of others have taken that way too literally up to death's doorstep. But POTUS is in a whole different ballpark. We even amended the Constitution to address it.
Avatar
Ok, thanks. That’s actually the first answer I’ve gotten! :) It being more her inner circle, than the wider spread of — whatever this is — is helpful to know. Seriously, thank you.
Avatar
Yup, that's more or less how it played out. I think you can pin it a bit more on Pelosi, she was more directly involved. Maybe some other CA pols. But the broader national party, other senators and donors and the rest of it, didn't much weigh in so much as they all refused to actively intervene.
Avatar
No? I'm a fiercely loyal Democrat and I wanted Feinstein out before her final term, and certainly wanted her to retire when she was walking dead in office. And yeah Biden should step down in favor of Harris for the same reason he ran in the first place. To save American democracy.
