anyone have recommendations for dinner in San Francisco? Will have kids in tow, but they’re increasingly adventurous eaters

Oh, and my god: the chicken at Zuni Cafe.

House of Nanking in Chinatown. Great for sharing, absolutely unreal old school Chinese food

this is absolutely the sort of thing I was looking for, thanks!

Z&Y is also really good
Avatar
absolutely cosign. that place is magical.

we are there right now and you’re all right, I’m thrilled

The SF Ferry Building has a bunch of spots during the day that are all worth your while (burger spot, Mexican, empanadas, etc etc). Sit down dinner with amenable kids is something I don’t have a good read on because I’m mostly there after dark to drink now

Get a meat cone at the Ferry Building!

Sadly I think Bocalone has closed there for good, which is a damn shame because that was @ms8.bsky.social ‘s Kryptonite

Aw man, I miss the tasty salted pig parts place!

You have a lot of great recommendations here. But fyi if you end up going to the California Academy of Sciences in GG Park, then I actually recommend their cafeteria. And if you go, you should visit the living roof. And the (free) observation tower across the plaza at the de Young Museum.

I like A16 for Italian Food in the Marina, R&G in Chinatown for Chinese food (my mom orders the fried crab every time she visits the city) and Burma Superstar in the Inner Richmond and it’s also close to GreenApple, a great local bookstore.

Oh shit welcome!! Depends a lot on where you are and what you're looking for. Best family spots in Chinatown are Yuet Li, Sam Wo, and R&G Lounge. If you want sit-down Mexican, Donaji. Pizza: Cellarmaker or Yellow Moto in the Mission, or Kezar Pizzetta or Pizzetta 211 if you're near Golden Gate Park

And while I'm sure you have your itinerary planned, I'm obligated to spread the word that my friends are hosting a lil parade along the beach tomorrow. And of course Sunday is the Pride parade bsky.app/profile/grea...
Join us for a people-powered, fossil-fuel free community parade!   June 29th, 11 to 1 From Noriega & Great Highway to Judah   March with our band or picnic in the dunes and enjoy all the fun floats. Free apple pie!   With Grand Marshal Joel Engardio! RSVP: bit.ly/3VzxCqh

Depending on neighborhood: House of Nanking or San Tung for Chinese. Scoma's on Fisherman's Wharf is old school and has good food options for kids. Ebisu for Japanese and near Golden gate Park.

Sunday's San Rafael Farmers' Market is easier for parking (shorter distance than Ferry Plaza [gotta get there *way* early for easy, close parking]), next to Frank Lloyd Wright's incredible Marin Civic Center, & great jumping off place to explore Marin (inc Muir Woods' redwoods: make rezzies!).
Sunday Marin — Agricultural Institute of Marinwww.agriculturalinstitute.org farmers market, produce market, produced organic food, produced vegetables, produced fruit, bounty box, agriculture, produce pick up

OTOH Ferry Plaza is a fun ride on SF's trolleys etc from the Embarcadero. Have fun!

Anywhere in Japantown if location is convenient
Avatar
Scott I don't have any opinions on dinner but be sure to get a bread alligator
Avatar
I mean Boudin is right on the wharf, Bread Alligator and Bread Turtle are a must (and you can get a meal there as well)

How much is dealing with pride weekend crowds a plus or a minus? You're pretty good for transportation there but it's going to be hell of a crowd this weekend.
Avatar
Good to know for planning purposes, I hadn’t thought about that
Avatar
Adventure you say? I ate at a SF Long John Silvers in 1978. I was 8. I don’t remember much else from that trip, so it must have been good.
Avatar
OH! And Tony's Napoletana pizza. Top 3 spot in the US imo.
Avatar
Some of my faves: Yank Sing Golden Boy Pizza (cash only) Hog Island Oyster Mister Jui's Kin Khao
Avatar
I haven’t lived there in a decade, but: Greens Z&Y La Oaxaqueña (hole in the wall, posted hours not necessarily reliable) Lers Ros Mission Chinese Flour + Water Taqueria Vallarta Humphry Slocombe ice cream

Mario’s in North Beach is very charming affordable and kid friendly. Scoma’s in the Wharf manages to have old school iconic charm and great food.
Avatar
Oh Scoma’s is right by our hotel, that looks great. Thank you!
Avatar
Scoma’s was a huge hit, thank you!
Avatar
Yay. Going there for my anniversary
Avatar
I was worried it wasn’t there anymore
Avatar
You've gotten a ton of great ones already, but specifically by the wharf but slightly-off-beaten-path, Abacá is one of the finest meals I have had in ages and I bet adventurous kids would find it fun as hell
Avatar
I'd suggest BBQ'd techlords, but they are bitter and their sclerotic hearts ooze poison.

This Lasagneria came highly recommended to me. A friend went with a party of 6 and they got 6 different kinds of Lasagna. Sounds perfect to me. marcellaslasagneria.net

Tony’s in North Beach is great pizza. Sens is a good Mediterranean spot with a great view over embarcadero.

Not to mention any burrito in mission
Avatar
Definitely hit up any of the great taquerias in the Mission, e.g. El Metate. On the waterfront, La Mar is a worthy splurge and Gott’s does fantastic burgers. The Morris is more adult, but one of the best meals I’ve had in SF. The Progress is also superb. Both $$$. +100 to Zuni and the chicken.
Avatar
Have you considered Rice-a-Roni? It’s the San Francisco treat.

Skip Fisherman’s Wharf in favor of Ferry Building, Mission (anywhere on Valencia St., murals in the alleys, La Taqueria), walk from the Yacht Club to the Golden Gate Bridge along Chrissy Field, Ocean Beach & Outer Sunset (DamnFine pizza), Golden Gate Park (botanical gardens, Japanese tea garden).
Avatar
Burma Superstar, it’s been a while since I was in SF but I think it’s in the Richmond
Avatar
Also, it’s not a dinner place and the line was always long and kids may not like it at all but Swan Oyster Depot fucking ruled the one time I ate there

Z&Y is our go to spot in SF Chinatown
