Stop: making live action adaptations of cartoons Start: defaulting to animated adaptations of novels

Oh man this should be NEUROMANCER

Literally every scifi or fantasy novel should be animated rather than having a bunch of live action with crap CGI

I would have preferred an animated series, there I said it

Booooo!!!! I think the show is aided so much by the acting (not just voices) of Thomas Jane, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, David Strathairn, Jared Harris, and Cara Gee. If it was animated, it just wouldn't be the same.

I am a minority on this one and in truth The Expanse is the exception to the rule of bad live action adaptations these days
Avatar
Is it good? I liked the hell out of those books

It's so good. They obviously had to consolidate some characters. But, there are some excellent casting choices. And, the actors that start off unevenly improve as the series goes on. It's my all-time favorite sci-fi show.
Avatar
They cast an Iranian actress as an Indian woman, this still kinda pisses me off tbh
Avatar
Agree. The Expanse is an example of how good live action 🎬 can be.
Avatar
Well then! I look forward to it.
Avatar
I fear for my two favourite characters who I think might be tough to cast but I’ll give it a whirl.
Avatar
The last season of it kind of falls apart a bit for external reasons; the first three, at least, are bangers.
Avatar
It's a big pile of wasted potential.

There are exceptions, but these exceptions are for relatively hard speculative fiction. THE MARTIAN was perfectly suited to a live action adaptation precisely b/c it was intentionally very close to reality. Good epic speculative fiction movies tend to be from relatively hard / low-magic novels.
Avatar
In particular, there was a great deal more restraint and discipline than typical in modern works in the speculative elements used for THE LORD OF THE RINGS, DUNE, DRACULA, and other speculative fiction works that, in addition to being great on their own, spawned great live action adaptations.
Avatar
I should say "contemporary" instead of "modern". But the point is--the deviations from reality in the most hugely influential pioneering works in various genres of speculative fiction tend to be much smaller b/c audiences weren't already acclimated to a wide variety of 'magic' tropes.
Avatar
Yeah. Though more 'mythic' things from the period like the substories in the Silmarilion or Lord Dunsany just cry out for an animated adaptation, because the inevitable stylisation gives you more freedom in depicting both heroic action and extreme emotion (and in Dunsany's case, wry irony).

Disagree with "every" but it would be a better default mode. X-Men 97 certainly shows how great an animated superhero show can be.

I personally am not into that particular style but I am all for people exploring it more

On the fence with rotoscoping. Linklater’s a real talent as a director but that isn’t his best work.

I think the animated over live action could provide a solution other than cgi for fantasy. I remember seeing it in Legion for psychic combat and it looked sick.

Anime’s been doing serious scifi and fantasy for ages!

Tom Goes to the Mayor style :P

[rockwell standing man] animation should be treated as a medium, not a genre.

War and Peace but everyone is a cat in the style of Don Bluth.

One thing I respect about DC - they've kept making cartoons out of their cartoons. (We'll just gloss over the fact that the live action movies they *have* done are mostly eyes-filled-with-molten-gold level horrible.)

The Animated Adventures of Holden Caulfield

finally, we could have decent adaptations of Rushdie's books

I think about the Stormlight animated > live action delta all the time.

Has it really been 18 years since A SCANNER DARKLY? youtu.be/seP2DPqd0o8?...

It has long been my position that a book-accurate animated adaptation of Frankenstein would be amazing.
