yesterday marked the 35th birthday of John Woo's masterpiece The Killer, so I decided to share this little essay I wrote about it last year www.patreon.com/posts/107599...

Not watching „Pretty Woman“ would be a big mistake. Huge. Sabrina and Torsten reassess the classic 1990 romcom “Pretty Woman.” Yes, the little arthouse drama that jumpstarted Jason Alexander’s career and isn’t remembered for much else… #romcom #romcompodcast #romanticcomedy #prettywoman

Joe Biden refusing to take advice from people who have been wrong about everything for decades could be seen as an indication his brain is still working
Avatar
The biggest issue with Biden coverage is that he’s now The Story, which means that most of the press is focused on The Story and not any of the context or consequences. If we were having a serious discussion about qualifications for presidency, age, and the two main candidates, I’d be fine with it.

Congratulations to the UK for ushering in a new government who will bring their own unique brand of disappointment to the masses.

Dunno which is worse. The backgrounding against Fatima Payman, the willingness of some media to jump on it, the apparent suggestion that a woman saying “in God’s hands” somehow equals fanaticism or the number of unhinged rusted ons tying themselves in knots trying to explain why it’s ok to hate…

I am unapologetically expecting to react in this manner. Can’t explain why that film holds such a special place in my heart, but it does
AXEL F: I’d love to pretend I’m immune to the allure of nostalgia, but when Eddie ganked a snowplow for a car chase and “Shakedown” started blaring out of the speakers, I basically came.

I think we can all agree that the ALP in Australia is doing a great job of positioning itself as the slightly less shit than the libs party. Cos who else you got?

Referring to the UK, but true everywhere. It does not benefit people in power to educate youth in a way that threatens their power.
I was talking to someone yesterday about how, if media literacy was taught in schools, we would have a far better chance of the electorate making informed decisions, which might be why media literacy isn’t taught in schools

Also hoping Lorne Balfe keeps some funky Harold Faltermeyer action happening

Adelaide folk. Tomorrow night, I’m treading the boards at Rhino Room doing a bit of what they used to call “standup comedy” if anyone is around town at 7. The very funny Stella Kappos, Raw Comedy state winner 2024 is featuring.

Just read the shittiest, dumbest piece of analysis I think I’ve ever encountered. So bad (it’s about a movie released in recent years) that I’m not going to give away any further details, in case someone feels compelled to look it up. It’s that fucking bad.

honestly they’re kinda cooking with this

Call me crazy, but I don’t think using the phrase “it’s in God’s hands” equates to claiming to be guided by God. #auspol

RIP Robert Towne, this is still one of the most chilling summaries of the nature of greed I’ve ever encountered in fiction

The "Biden Too Old" drama is actually extremely relevant to the Supreme Court / Trump dictator conversations. The Democrats keep annointing flawed, white centrist candidates with 1970s politics who everyone is already kinda sick of. That's how we got stuck with Trump in 2016. Build a bench, ffs!
Notice how everyone is somehow talking about Biden Too Old right now, and NOT about how the Supreme Court just legalized Trump being a dictator for life and gutted the administrative state, and how the Heritage Foundation is now issuing terrorist threats? Think that might not be an accident?
Avatar
I don't actually wish I could control minds but if I could I would control Joe Biden and have him order the successful execution of Trump and give a press conference about it and have Biden claim scotus said he could without any consequences. Then give him control back. Just to see what happens
Avatar
I’m saying, simple solution is that Biden orders hits on a few Supreme Court judges because… official duties and such. Two birds, one stone. He has immunity and such, even if the judges that said it would be pushing daisies

“democrats have to win every election forever” is not a sustainable solution and it is quite literally the one we are facing unless we break the power of this court
The electoral problem has become, as the IRA gloated to Thatcher, that the GOP only needs to get lucky once and the Democrats need to be lucky forever. Either they’re going to do something about the court - now, not eventually - or we will simply play iterations of this game until the GOP wins.

RIP Robert Towne, who crystallised the ‘ideal’ of the genius 70s screenwriter. Everyone is going to mention Chinatown, of course, but I am more likely to rewatch The Last Detail, a rough, heartbreaking piece of realism that goes against the times and does something timeless.
Avatar
Dipped briefly back into twitter & saw one of the few accounts I miss from there, John Frankensteiner, posting about how Towne hated the movie Greystoke so much he credited his script to his dog, who then went on to win an Oscar.

Up at 5am and just heard the news about Robert Towne. Brilliant writer (CHINATOWN, of course), but don't sleep on his directorial work. TEQUILA SUNRISE may suffer from intense '80s-ness, but it's a wonderful character study about the ways old friends see each other as who they wish they still were.

when I was doing research for a piece I wrote on Klute back in 2016, I found this old interview from a '72 issue of Sight & Sound where Pakula discusses Jane Fonda's transcendent scenes with her character Bree's psychiatrist. I still think about this sometimes
