I feel like this should go without saying but the only sane & responsible vote is November is the one that prevents Trump from taking office & finishing off American democracy. Unless something extremely surprising happens, that choice will be Joe Biden. And in any event it will be the D nominee.

My fear is this. Biden gets re-elected, and then dies in office. Harris becomes president. Whatever GOP power remains in the other branches (supreme court, one of the two houses) remains in power. Harris is completely incapable of stopping this branch from doing literally everything they want.
Avatar
I don't see that as even remotely likely. People always imagine Republicans to be far more powerful than they actually are.

Donald Trump, despite holding no actual political office, managed to put a stop to Ukraine aid for 6 months. We underestimate the power of these people at our own peril, and we owe it to ourselves to have the strongest possible defense against them.

I mean, yeah, I worry about this. I also worry about this if Biden is alive and operating at 100% capacity. I also worry about this if [insert literally any other Democrat] replaces Biden. This is a structural problem that changing the top of the ticket can't fix.

Why do you think she's incapable?

When has there been a situation where she and the GOP were on opposite sides of an issue, the GOP had significant leverage, and specifically she pulled off a win? This is the literal ask we are making of any Democratic president.
Avatar
Not clear why you feel Harris would have less power to stop the GOP than Biden would have had.
Avatar
Because she has not demonstrated this capability. Biden, on the other hand, played a pivotal role in things such as the affordable care act, the inflation reduction act, the chips act, and somehow managed to get Ukraine aid through.

I think it might even be a vote for Harris either way and I'm good with that

You make it sound like Trump was the only one having bad intentions with US democracy. In fact he's just a tool in the hands of the republiban cult.

Yet it does need to be said. This basic point eludes so many people, especially on the progressive left.

OK. But. Traditional Democrats need to start lifting younger people up to higher offices, and boomers MUST pass the torch/knowledge for future elections. NOW. TODAY. DO NOT let this shhhht go for another four years. DO NOT embarass us four years from now.
Avatar
A suicide mission. I’ll vote for the Democrat. But Biden will not beat Trump. He will go down in history for that.

We’ve been warned… Trump is a Russian asset…

A Biden win isn’t a panacea. It’s the start of a long, hard, journey without any guarantees. But no plausible roads that lead *anywhere* we want to go begin with Trump being reelected.

That’s cool, and i agree, but its very clear they are going to lose now. It would be more productive to start organizing to resist mass murder. Get ready to host refugees in your house if you live in a blue state, arm up, and fortify your house against the inevitable day of the death squads.
Avatar
Also, I hate to say this, but given that neither side has any way of dealing with the climate disaster, which is on top of us right this minute, we should all get ready to be refugees. 4 feet of water might be on you lawn tomorrow, or a train full of chemicals might explode, and nothing will be done
Avatar
Acting as if our huge gains in climate action under the Biden administration never even happened is part of the problem here. We can't reverse matters but we can mitigate them a hell of a lot.

They didn’t manage to reach their targets and their targets were themselves insufficient. Dying 5% slower is not a winning campaign pitch, they needed to have a vision of rapid transition away from fossil fuels and they have failed to even articulate that.

Running down what has been accomplished is a great way to keep further progress from happening. What the hell is wrong with "Yay! More of this, please!"?
Avatar
Cheerleading a path that leads to my death seems like some sort of suicidal ideation, honestly. I’m not sure that i can explain to you in a way that you will fully grasp that many people will choose the quicker death, given a choice between two inevitable paths to death.

Really it's more like referendum on democracy, which I'm in favor of, so I will vote for the candidate most likely to beat the Republican.

It definitely needs to be said to the people writing headlines at a certain newspaper and a number of news channels.

If he drops the bid, I'd like a Shapiro/Moore ticket, personally.
