According to colleagues, IU faculty arrested at the Palestine solidarity encampment in Bloomington have been slapped w 1yr bans from campus. I have seen many examples of police brutality agst campus protests over the yrs- inc student bans - but I have never heard of faculty targeted this way before

reported actions like this will *definitely* help mend fences with the same faculty that passed a vote of non-confidence in senior administrators ten days ago by 91%
Hundreds of Indiana University faculty members vote 'no confidence' in Whittenwww.indystar.com 92% of attending faculty voted 'no-confidence' in Whitten, with more than 800 members participating.

Well, there you go; there's the real reason

That vote appears to have completely on point.

arrested students have been banned from campus for a year as well
Avatar
Legit curious how this works when it's your employer (for facility) or your landlord (for students living on campus). A normal landlord can't "ban" you from your home, right?
Avatar
Universities are generally exempted from landlord-tenant rules so that they don’t, for instance, need to evict students every summer for the summer vacation if students choose not to leave the dorm
Avatar
Wouldn't they just write the terms of the lease to coincide with the start and end of the academic year? I wouldn't think they'd need an explicit exemption to make that work.
Avatar
What happens if someone overstays their lease? You can’t just barge in with cops. You’d need to file a lawsuit, serve process, have court hearings, and Oop now it’s 3 months from now and there’s new students moving in.
Avatar
Not a lawyer, but it’s my understanding that dorms are not considered a primary residence for students. At least in the colleges/towns I’ve attended. At least that was the justification for not letting students register to vote in college towns. Again, not a lawyer.
Avatar
Usually, your housing agreement is contingent upon being a student in good standing. So, if you're suspended or expelled, your housing agreement is terminated as well.
IU is a state school and subject to the 1st Amendment. I see this working out poorly for them.

Are they supposed to teach online then?

I’m sure this is going to work out so well for the university
Avatar
Its so disgusting how eager they are to carry bibis water
Avatar
Hope they get buried in wrongful termination and 1st amendment suits.
Avatar
What arsehole made that decision? But why a one year ban then?
Avatar
Nobodys made any decision I am just extrapolating their justifications and making a prediction Banned from campus > cannot be physically present to teach/research/participate in faculty administrative tasks>so sorry we are canceling your employment due to your voluntary actions

the right is moving merrily along - aided by a captured press & media - to inculcate the sense that "universities, students, and professors are bad and must be punished" this is in keeping with the decades-long grooming of the right's voters to distrust expertise (which comes from higher education)
Avatar
Utterly outrageous. What possible justification could there be? And how are they supposed to do their jobs?
Avatar
I don’t know if the practical implications of this policy has been worked out yet
Avatar
IU is just ahead of the rest of the schools in trying out this new no-faculty no-student all-administration style of higher learning
Avatar
id be ever so curious to think what the teachers unions think about THIS one.
Avatar
College professors are not unionized.
Avatar
Avatar
granted, not every school has unionized. i'm not sure if Columbia is (doubtful). the AAUP is growing, though. there's also the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO. I'm a card carrying member of the OEA.

You're the only one I've ever met then. Good luck.

Serious question, does it not trip skepticism alarm bells when you see that there is no identifying information listed for the recipient or the issuing officer? Like, what would be the enforcement mechanism here? How would this get logged in any system? How would it get enforced?
Avatar
Like your whole bio seems to imply you're a truth seeker but you just uncritically share this as though it's fact?

"Officers told IDS... that those arrested would be charged with criminal trespassing, while others would be charged with battery and resisting... The IDS confirmed that several of those arrested for trespassing are now forbidden from entering IU’s campus for a year." www.idsnews.com/article/2024...
33 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at Dunn Meadow encampment Thursdaywww.idsnews.com The protest saw a physical confrontation as police forcefully arrested peaceful protesters.
Avatar
This does not actually confirm that ANY of the people banned from campus were students or that the document you linked to is authentic.
Avatar
In fact the language, to me, specifically implies (not directly states) that the students didn't get banned and the non-students did. And you should be extremely skeptical of any claim that faculty or current students were banned from campus for a year without due process from the university.
Avatar
To be clear, this could all end up being true. Cops have done much dumber things than this. But your bar for skepticism should be high.
Avatar
the OP is based on someone talking to actual people who said this was true of faculty.
Avatar
That’s the student paper isn’t it? I’d trust them to know.
Avatar
You gotta actually read what it says. It does not say that any students were banned from campus for a year.
Avatar
All they are prepared to do is escalate the level of punishment
Avatar
Have they done actual university hearings for the students and faculty who were arrested, or just summarily banned them?
Avatar
I have a friend that's a professor there, I just texted her to make sure her and hers are safe. Both her and her husband are very active with social matters as are their kids.
Avatar
Update: they are safe, she's on the other side of campus, and not involved. But Holy shit is this unacceptable! SWAT and snipers?!
Avatar
So there's no reason for anyone to ever go to that school again or donate any funds to it. Glad we cleared that up.
