As a man, I just want to be left out of this. I'm happy at home, don't make me go to the woods. Bears like the woods, pick the bear.

Extremely stupid people: The bridge fell because a huge boat ran into it. Very stupid people: It fell because terrorists replaced the ship's crew with woke DEI. Sorta stupid people: It fell because we've been underfunding infrastructure. Smart people: The bridge fell because a huge boat ran into it.

I really do think that propagating fake or unverifiable quotes/tweets is bad & harmful, even (especially?) if they "sound like they could be real though," & even if the person targeted is legitimately terrible for other reasons or due to other statements. The waters of truth are muddy enough already

When I was a kid, I used to correct people's speech and grammar. I don't do that anymore. But the other day when my dad pronounced the word pedantic as "pendantic", I just had to correct him. How is that not the funniest thing in the whole world?

I'm glad that Claude Debussy died in 1918 before his name became really really funny.

A friend of mine performed an analysis of Ground News's main feature: Blindspot Long story short, it amplifies factually untrue stories that spread misinformation about Transgender people, vaccines and the events of Jan 6th. Please give it a read and share: www.scoott.blog/posts/2024/0...
Why I'm skeptical of Ground News - scoott.blogwww.scoott.blog The app publishes fake news from far-right sources, and presents it on equal footing with real journalism. So why are leftist creators so eager to promote it?

So, it's been over a year since this story where they allowed a drug smuggler to walk away from a checkpoint, apparently identified the suspect, and then did nothing? How does one even ask for a follow-up for this sort of thing? www.npr.org/2022/10/20/1...

It's been almost a year since this happened. It's such a weird story. They just let the suspect run away. They claim to have identified the suspect, but as far as I know, never followed up. At this point I've gotta wonder, is that because the suspect was a cop? www.npr.org/2022/10/20/1...

I just wanted to call out @dasharez0ne.bsky.social as having amazing alt-text on their images. It's not quite as clinical and boring in the same way that some people might prefer (and I get it) but I feel like the text really captures the vibe of the image.

I'm gonna laugh if the blackout is actually because some investor heard that people are calling them "skeets" and has shut everything down until they have a plan to fix that.

I wrote a GitHub issue expressing some of my opinions on slur filtering on BlueSky. I'm definitely not an expert on safety, so I really want to hear critiques. The gist is that we should implement a testing framework to make it easier for coders to write effective filters.
Testing framework needed to assist slur filtering efforts · Issue #1337 · bluesky-social/atprotogithub.com There is currently a lot of interest in creating filters to prevent users from using slurs in handles, and presumably could be extended to other features like lists, display names, etc. Just in the...

I've seen an attempt to implement word filtering, and it's a surprisingly complex problem. The basic problem seems so simple. Here's a few words that are bad, don't let people use them. But it gets really hard, really fast, and can even get dangerous.

I guess just to throw it out there, filtering slurs and swears can be really hard, especially with multiple languages, but I think at least some can probably get put on the naughty list preemptively for account names.
