She shows him that it's the same chain police sell to students and he says "nope. not the same. This is an industrial chain"
Avatar
It... literally... has the built in Kryptonite lock! ITS IN HIS FREAKIN HANDS.
Avatar
This is Officer Chain, his job is chain
Avatar
You'd think its "protect" or "serve" or "protect AND serve" but no its just chain.

Avatar
Is the lock built in? If it is that would explain my confusion. It looked to me like the lock was a separate piece.
Avatar
You can actually zoom in on her phone and maybe see? It doesn't look built into the chain. And the chain on the phone has a sleeve so I can't tell how big it is.
It's not built in, but the lock chain comes with links with a hex cross section, which the chain in his hands has. That's not something you'll find on typical industrial lifting chain.
Avatar
I thought it was this kind of lock, specifically, just without the canvas sheath.
Oh, it might be. I was seeing this one. Either way, the lock is distinctive, and paired with that hex chain, there's no question they're a matched pair.
And I mean, the cop is right inasmuch as that chain is specifically intended to be resistant to bolt cutters. Because thieves use bolt cutters. He's of course fully wrong about how common it is, and how likely it is it was the most convenient chain for students to get.
Avatar
Yeah I think you're both right? What he's holding in his hand looks like the orange one. But what I saw yesterday and what's on her phone is that yellow one.
Avatar
Yah variations on a theme, basically. Kryptonite uses the same type of chains across all its locks.
Avatar
I think they all have different chains they're displaying but this one is definitely a built-in. The orange button is what releases the hasp.
Avatar
And regardless, what he's holding would not weird me out AT ALL to see on a bike in a city.
Avatar
It's a totally common item - I probably walked by half a dozen bikes chained up with that specific lock and another half dozen with a variation of the theme. Hell I have a Kryptonite lock set for MY bike with a rubber wrapped steel cable instead of a chain.
Avatar
I would say that it's stunning the police have decided to use this kind of argument instead of just like... Idk releasing the names or counts of the people they arrested who aren't students... But at this point it's hard for the police to surprise me with incompetence.
Avatar
Can confirm, lived in that city, owned that bike lock.
Avatar
no, it's a bad angle on the photo. he's holding the small orange u-lock, and that orange button slides to cover the keyhole.
Avatar
Since bike chains are illegal, only outlaws have bike chains.
Avatar
Ironically only outlaws have bikes now too, since the rest of them got stolen
Avatar
It's a vicious cycle.

Hi, industrial supplies distribution sales staff here. We use all kinds of chains actually. Big chains, small chains, bead-link chains, jack chains….
Avatar
Yeah “an industrial chain” is meaningful only in the universe of cop speak. Any phrase is viable to a cop so long as it means “we don’t use brains here.”
Avatar
(Walmart decides employee name tags will be worn hung around the neck instead of clipped) “yeah and make sure these are the *industrial* chains, 17 pounds per please.”
Avatar
You got yer sash chains, twist-link chain, double-loop chain. Ya got lock-link chains, register chain…

I shouldn't be laughing but yes, yes I am.

Hi, outside agitator here. Nope, only outside agitators use chains.
Avatar
Well, I suppose that settles it. You can look forward to the NYPD using your testimony in future court proceedings.
oh god, oh fuck…

HEERE THEY COME! CLINKETY CLANK DOWN THE TRACK IT'S LOTS AND LOTS OF CHAINS BIG chains, little chains, steam chains, diesel, and passenger chains! even chains that blow through snow! Old chains, new chains, fast chains, slooooow chains, smokin’ chains, even chains from around the world!
Avatar
seems kind of expensive to use kryptonite chains designed to break angle grinders for anything other than security
Avatar
Do you mean like securing your bike to a bike rack?
Avatar
yes that is what I was referring to
Avatar
the nypd will only allow small-batch artisanal chains.
Avatar
Unless they’re made in the famous Rust Belt region of the US, they’re just sparkling restraints.
I'm a hobbyist blacksmith. If any protestors need a 3/8" hand forged chain, I'm definitely not industrial.
Avatar
That's how they get the crime numbers up to justify more cops and more money. Jokes aside, look at what what chain nearly every motorized 2-wheeler in NYC has on it. It's that chain.

We have this notion that people in power care in the slightest about evidence.

The message he's selling isn't to people in power. It's to the masses that keep them in power. It's all sales and marketing.

We have the notion that people in power ought to care about evidence, I hope we keep it, & I wish we'd do more to make people in power regret not caring
