It’s finally here! For years, @roseveleth.com has been working on an epic series about elite runners who’ve been told they can no longer race as women, because of their biology. TESTED is their story, & the story of sport’s history of dubious sex testing. Ep 1 is now online! link.chtbl.com/Rose_
Testedlink.chtbl.com <p>Who gets to compete? Since the beginning of women’s sports, there has been a struggle over who qualifies for the women’s category. Tested follows the unfolding story of elite female ...

Nasal vaccine: Researchers are enrolling volunteers for a Phase I clinical trial of a #Covid nasal vax. Adult volunteers are being sought for study sites nationwide. The candidate vax is expected to have enhanced protection against a range of emerging #SARSCoV2 variants www.nih.gov/news-events/...

Just the phase 1 trial, but hopefully an important step toward an vaccine that prevents #COVID *infection,* and not just severe (acute) disease. If so, not only would it drastically reduce transmission, but it could provide MUCH stronger protection against #LongCOVID.

Boss wants us all to get together to do “something fun” and I’m pretty sure that means “get dinner together at a restaurant after work”, which…is not something I find fun currently. Tempted to propose “visit my yard & watch my ducks eat” as an alternative activity 😆🤷

Read the whole thread. But not while you’re drinking coffee.
When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

COVID levels on the west coast are 3x as high now as they were this time last year. cool cool cool cool
Absolutely infuriating that we have no infrastructure to notify the population of these trends. City public health departments should be monitoring local wastewater and sending alerts to the entire population when it crosses a specific threshold.

Just FYI we’re entering a summer Covid wave right now (especially western regions in the US); you can see it in the CDC wastewater plot here (and anecdotally a bunch of my friends are suddenly testing positive). www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

The number of people in my timeline in different networks saying they just got COVID for the first time is absolutely overwhelming. For the love of God, wear a mask in indoor spaces; it's the least we can do for one another.

You really would think, in this year of (whatever calendar you use), doctors seeing a race or sex based assertion justifying lesser care for a particular group would have long ago thought 'hmmm, better check the science on that', but no. And these dangerous biases come up time and time again!
It turns out when you stop scaling analyses based on the racist and incorrect assumption that Black people naturally have lower lung capacity, more Black people are diagnosed with moderate to severe COPD, move up the lung transplant priority list, qualify for additional screenings... 🧪🩺
Removing Race from Lung Function Tests Could Benefit Millions of Black Americanswww.scientificamerican.com A new study shows that hundreds of thousands more Black people in the U.S. would qualify for a lung disease diagnosis and disability payments if lung-function measurements weren’t adjusted for race

If you adjust the pre-vaccine death tolls of diphtheria, measles, mumps, pertussis, and polio for population, 43,079 American deaths are prevented each year by their elimination. Last year, the death toll of COVID was 75,603. We're told to accept it. t.co/NnFCppkF5C
COVID lulls aren't being earned by policy; they're being bought with infections and deathst.co Celebrating a COVID lull years into the Biden Administration's utter abandonment is woefully out of touch with the science
