It's a three-box day at SCOTUS, so we're expecting up to 6 opinions.
Avatar
First is Texas v. New Mexico and Colorado. Jackson has the 5-4 opinion. Gorsuch dissents, with Thomas, Alito, and Barrett. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Second is State v. Muñoz. Barrett has the decision holding a citizen has no fundamental liberty interest in their noncitizen spouse being allowed in the country. Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson, dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Third is Erlinger v. US. Another Armed Career Criminal Act case, Gorsuch has the opinion of the court. The 6-3 decision has Kavanaugh, Alito, and Jackson dissenting. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Fourth and not last is Smith v. Arizona. Kagan has the opinion vacating the Arizona Court of Appeals decision in the Confrontation Clause case. There are no dissents. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Thus far, these all were in the lower-tier of the cases that were remaining at the start of this morning. None of the 10+ big decisions left have been announced yet today.

Breaking: The Supreme Court, 8-1, upholds the federal ban on possession of a firearm by those with a domestic violence order out against them. Thomas is the lone dissenter.

Chief Justice Roberts has the opinion for the court. 18 U.S.C. Section 922(g)(8) is upheld. Five other justices filed concurring opinions.

That is the final decision of the day. The next decision day is Wednesday.

Based on in quick reading of this- state law requiring insurance for firearm possession would meet muster ( except for Thomas, of course). Pretty explicitly.

Thank you, Chris, for keeping us all informed.

Despite Thomas' continual ravings and nonsensical opinions, there are limits to gun ownership and possession.
Avatar
They’ll save a case like this for when Trump is dictator to suddenly decide the other way. SCOTUS opinions are best served cold.😉
Avatar
Lol, of course Thomas is the lone dissent. What a joke
Avatar
That's the last one today?
Avatar
inauspicious datapoint for the history & tradition test that its progenitor now finds himself the lone dissenter
Avatar
One of the most hamfisted tests I've ever seen
Avatar
Clarence Thomas would be totally okay with wife beaters buying AR-15s, good to know
Avatar
40% of police are big mad as well.
Avatar
40% of police *self-report* being mad. The rest are better at hiding it.

Avatar
he should just wear his sponsors' logos on his judges robes
Avatar
Exactly. Just like NASCAR. "My NRA Dodge was running really great today but we just got beat out by the competition."
Avatar
Clarence “Arm the domestic abusers so they can more easily kill the victim of their abuse” Thomas
Avatar
With the now legal bump stock
Avatar
So he can kill his wife, their children, and the rest of the Walmart with their not-machine-gun machine gun
Avatar
Initially when I saw this I was happy. Now I’m thinking this is ridiculous. Obviously shouldn’t be allowed to have guns if domestic violence order. That’s common sense! Shouldn’t need to go to Supreme Court with everyone on pins and needles!
Avatar
Clarence Thomas Clarence Thomas Clarence Thomas Clarence Thomas ooh shit Clarence Thomas
Avatar
Committing domestic violence to the East, committing domestic violence to the West …
Avatar
Avatar
I’m trying to imagine *dissenting*. What a tool.

Sotomayor's concurrence in Rahimi perfectly summarizes the problem with originalism as applied by the FedSoc Christofascists:

That's a huge relief. Thomas is such a piece of shit.

Fuck Clarence Thomas with a cactus.
