when i say the NYTimes does not deserve your money, i also mean NYTimes cooking, NYTimes puzzles, and crosswords and wordle, Wirecutter, and all their podcasts
Recap: 1. The Times runs a scandal piece on how Biden administration lobbied not to publish age guidelines for youth trans care, because those guidelines could be politically abused. 2. Pressed by the Times, the administration puts age limits on trans care much more severe than the guidelines.

This is so fricking true. Want something to happen? Let people know what you're shooting for. I know it's happened for me, and it's something I need to keep in mind more often.
If there were one piece of advice which I would give to a young person that I think is applicable to every career (and other parts of life) it would be: You have to say what you want, out loud. No one can see inside your head. If you want to do a job or get into an area, you need to say so.

This is why mask bans are suddenly being proposed. If you’re in a place where that’s happening and you think we should prioritize public and personal health and freedom over expanding the powers of the police state then please do let your representatives know why the freedom to mask matters to you
Cops don’t like them; makes it harder to use surveillance footage and facial recognition to arrest people (especially at protests).

Scott Lynch is brilliant in this thread.
It is! It's godawful! Toys R' Us is a zombie brand and that commercial will likely never even make it to TV. Still, it might as well have been designed in a lab for the express purpose of demonstrating WHY faux-AI like Sora is useless for producing anything except inhumane pixelated clown shit. 🧵

This, absolutely. I moderated a games phpBB board for decades.
You can tell who did and who did not moderate IRC/phpBB/whatever back in the day, because all of us who did learned the true shape of online group culture: your culture is the shittiest person you don't ban

An easy way to support your public library is to make use of it—even if only to visit. We keep (anonymized) statistics not only on circulation totals but on attendance & visits and even on patron-staff interactions. Big numbers please trustees and municipal/county administrators. 📚
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

Upset about the Scholastic "bigot button"? Send some e-business to my friend Kathy Burnette, owner of Brain Lair Books in South Bend. Bulk school orders help keep her business afloat, but fear of political pressure is making local schools reluctant to buy from her. www.brainlairbooks.com

I find that women and gender nonconforming people disproportionately apologize for having to charge people for what they produce. DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR THIS. STOP. You aren't forcing anyone to do anything and there is a cost to whatever it is that you are producing as an offering.

The thing non-artists don't understand about art is that it requires the most human aspects of ourselves: our curiosity, our empathy, our sense of wonder, our need to connect, our anger, our sadness, and our silliness too. It requires a mind that thinks ans cares.

Rereading Connie Willis' excellent collection, FIRE WATCH, and every time I read "All My Darling Daughters" I just...god, that story is so brutal and so well done.

Not great news on the availability of foster homes. Anyone in the Indiana-ish area know someone either looking for a solo cat or a companion for another cat that has feline leukemia?
Avatar
Headed to the pet refuge today to talk to them re: foster home for Barry. I don't want to restore him to the outdoor life bc he'll infect other cats. Hadn't realized how attached I'd gotten, and I don't usually wallow, but did just cry all over him. Such a good little guy.
Avatar
For people who wanted a pic of Barry, here it is. He's tiny next to my monsters, weighing in at 8 pounds.
Avatar
Sadly, Barry turns out to have feline leukemia. This is particularly sad because he’s only about six months old. He’ll convalesce in isolation for a few days while I try to figure out what to do. I suspect the best option is to have him remain an outdoor cat.
Avatar
Tonight I'm coaxing feral cat Barry into a carrier so I can take him in for neutering and shots tomorrow and I think this may affect his degree of trust in me.
