Obviously Ross Douthat doesn't want any Democrat to win but it's funny to see the guy whose No. 1 publishable opinion is that Americans need to have more babies pretend to go for the guy who blew up the child tax credit

Wow, real banana republic stuff. I'm glad our presidents can launder money and associate criminally without worrying about this kind of thing.
Reports: Brazil police have indicted Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association

Haven't changed the parts where he describes himself as abstinent from voting and as one of "those of us who remain on the wagon," i.e. a habitual nonvoter
Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

It's not just that it's a piece against voting, it's a fake world-weary article about how civic disengagement is good from a guy with radical reactionary politics who spends his life doing advocacy (including publishing this op-ed in the New York Times)

All these centrist Let's Have an Emergency Pageant of Democracy takes fall apart at the slightest contact with outside reality, but this part can't even hold up on its own terms!
Anne Applebaum here is arguing that 1. Trump is a senile gibbering idiot so therefore 2. the Democrats must distract the public from paying attention to him

Not saying which domain's behavior flowed into which but it's striking how you used to get one All-Star ballot when you went to the ballpark and pick the players you thought were best, and now the TV crew tells viewers to stuff the online ballot box with a straight team ticket as often as you can

Also thank goodness Trump has never pardoned and restored rank to court martialed war criminals, I guess our worries were for nothing

Also a little more subtly “SEAL Team Six” is the framework here because it was the original shockingly funny hypothetical but none of this military law stuff applies if he just sends the Marshals to kill someone—which, again, he already bragged he did

Anyway back on the particular topic it sure seems like the part about how Biden got way worse all of a sudden is what I would probably scrape together if I were a team of four New York Times White House reporters trying to explain how we all got entirely blindsided by the debate
Their MeToo stuff was full of this, reporting that like somebody had two dates that were rude and uncomfortable, said something that an underling interpreted as hostile, and oh yeah sexually assaulted someone else
Biden’s Lapses Are Said to Be Increasingly Common and Worrisomewww.nytimes.com People who have spent time with President Biden over the last few months or so said the lapses appear to have grown more frequent, more pronounced and, after Thursday’s debate, more worrisome.

There's lots of reporting in the story that is serious and disturbing if true—what's the point of throwing in an anecdote that you acknowledge is bogus? The paper has some bizarre institutional belief that throwing weak stuff on top of strong stuff make the story stronger.

Setting the particular topic aside for a second, this is a truly spectacular case of the Times' pathologically incompetent "Where there's fire, there's smoke" theory of writing up high-stakes investigative stories
