When I first saw this I thought "no, that can't possibly be true." But alas, the Times did indeed choose today of all days to publish a right winger's recycled piece about how they don't vote, failing to mention that the author basically thinks absolutist theocracies are cool.
On INDEPENDENCE DAY they published this. ON THE FOURTH OF JULY 2024 THE NEW YORK TIMES TOLD PEOPLE NOT TO VOTE. I'm furious.

It also appears this mendacious fool was lying about not voting. Which was publicly available information the fact checkers at the Times apparently failed to look for. bsky.app/profile/bubb...

Aww man, I just realized it’s the weirdo who writes for the Catholic journal thingy. That guy is a consistent presence in nyt opinion and he everything he writes is wrong. Yet he keeps getting invited back.

Have you figured it out yet? Maggot Habberman...

Wait until you see article about Coeur d'Alene.

No mention of Richard Butler or Bo Gritz for context, but lots of soft focus details about fields of wildflowers and dutiful wives. I’ve liked other pieces this author has written. I’d be curious to see what hit the cutting room floor.

Oh this is all why Ryan Williams was so into sheriffs!

I have a section in the book where I talk about Williams’s weird fixation on the “west”

Or that this is third diaspora of white nationalists to area.

This had my blood pressure through the roof

These people don't live in reality.

Imagine that -- another greasy turd lying about things... 🤬

The Times has fact-checkers? What have they been doing this past decade?

Seems like some folks at the times are … the world’s worst actual journalists!!

I'm thinking "failed" might not be the word you were looking for.

also he voted in both 2022 and 2020 and is lying. The New York Times is simply publishing fascist propaganda intended to suppress the non-fascist vote.
Avatar
He also voted in 2020 and 2022. So I’m sure a correction and apology for printing lies will be coming sooner rather than later.

I don’t subscribe, so I can’t cancel. So I unfollowed. That’ll teach ‘em lol.

For the record, I’m a WaPo gal.

"Why I don't vote, by which I mean, of course I do, but why YOU shouldn't vote so my vote counts for more."
Avatar
also failing to mention that the author votes in elections.
Avatar
I read he did… but that may not be accurate. It would make sense he does and tells others not to, though.
Avatar
ah.. seems it’s not ‘why I don’t vote’ but now ‘why I won’t vote.’ Tell a lie, change a word.
Avatar
Also hilarious that turns out he has been voting after all, plus imagining farcical scenarios caused by the authors guilt and embarrassment at their secret voting driving a need to keep their secret at any cost

Meet the opinion maker who wrote that piece, Matthew Walther, interviewed in 2023, who attended the notorious conservative Christian school, Hillsdale College in Michigan, that was so opposed to affirmative action that they went private so they wouldn’t have to comply with the law.
Q&A: Matthew Waltherhillsdalecollegian.com Matthew Walther is the editor of The Lamp, a Catholic literary journal, and a contributor to the New York Times. He was previously a national correspondent for The Week. The following has been edited ...

And WaPo gave us this.
the consolidated, center-right billionaire owned press continues to shift the editorial overton window rightward and if you can't see it you're either complicit or oblivious

If it keeps happening it's not a bug, it's a feature.

Instead of an apology and a retraction the NYT edited the headline to omit the not voting part.

Handily has comments off too so readers couldn’t accidentally add needed context
Avatar
(Not that comment sections are great but it’s telling which opinion articles they turn them off for)

And also that they vote, pretty regularly.

Hey, if the people who think like they do fail to vote, our Trump problem could be solved. Then we have to deal with the rest of the fascists.
