I don’t like Joe Biden, I’m furious with him, I am furious about the prospect of voting for him, but it is difficult to find the words to express how much worse Trump Presidency 2.0 would be, it’s shaping up to become a catastrophe that’s frankly hard to even imagine

All these people say they're trying to beat Donald Trump and none of them seem to be able to take five seconds to imagine what Donald Trump would say about their candidate picked by a brokered convention at the behest of the New York Times editorial board

New edicts from the Gang of Six today. Remember, you may not like our new kings' rulings, but don't protest at their houses. Work on defeating John Roberts and Sam Alito when they come up for reelection!

My first read: If a president commits crimes unrelated to him being the most powerful person in the world, he can be prosecuted. But if explicitly uses his powers to commit crimes, he is at least presumptively, and probably absolutely immune from prosecution. I mean, holy shit.

just ran across the fact that andy warhol rented the factory for $200/mo in 1964, roughly $2000/mo in 2024. average rent in manhattan these days (for a place i would wager is much smaller than a giant loft) is double that barriers to survival are also barriers to making art

Reminder that Aaron Swartz was facing 35 years in prison and financial devastation for trying to programmatically download and open the contents of JSTOR, which led to him taking his own life. But OpenAI is going to scrape all of academia and make billions by plagiarizing it.
New version of chatbot reaches level of function where it responds to all queries by making a little twisty-wrist gesture with pinched fingers and saying “But isn’t it more *complicated* than that?”

it's not a "windfall", because they planned and acted deliberately to get that money
The recent news from Massachusetts revenue officials that they collected about $1.8 billion this year from the so-called "millionaires tax" sparked chatter: Is the windfall great financial news — or a precursor to an exodus of wealthy residents?
Other states eye Mass. millionaires tax — for windfall or wealth exoduswww.wbur.org States considering wealth tax proposals, like Pennsylvania and Vermont, are taking note of Massachusetts' revenue gains. But at home, the question of whether the voter-approved Fair Share Amendment is...

pay a working civil engineer to write a monthly column about the state of infrastructure in america. like, there are so, so many jobs and topics of expertise in america and millions of knowledgeable experts on them, if you’re going to have an op-ed section why not encourage more curiosity about them
pay a working public defender to write a bi-weekly column on how the justice system works (and frequently doesn’t work) at a ground level, i don’t need any more constitutional law professor columns, even though i like some of them.

Worth noting Carnegie did this when faced with massive strikes and growing radical movements around the country. 1886 was the same year as Haymarket. His business partner/enforcer was literally shot by an anarchist. Public libraries are great but he and his ilk funded them because they were scared.
TIL Andrew Carnegie believed that public libraries were the key to self-improvement for ordinary folk. In the years between 1886 & 1917, Carnegie financed the construction of 2811 public libraries. Ironically this is the same reason rich people are now trying to defund libraries. Knowledge is power
