Honestly the “my wife is an independent autonomous human being and if she wants to fly a flag at our home I can’t and won’t stop her” is probably the most post-19th-century thing Alito has ever said.
Some real bangers in here

Bro is taking a gamble here....Trump won't like showing weakness to a woman.
Avatar
That doesn't matter anymore. Trump can't do anything to Alito anymore. The most he can do is not make him Chief Justice at some point.

Women are allowed to have autonomy when it gets him out of trouble.

Who knew Alito was such a feminist lib?

Her body, her choice ... oh wait

Does he have the right to use the property as he sees fit? If she has the right to raise a flag, doesn't he have the right to lower a flag? I'm so confused
Avatar
Actually what struck me was where he acknowledged she can legally hold title to property.
Avatar
Now we understand why he's working so hard to roll back whatever rights women have been found to have...
Avatar
women always flying flags
Avatar
Note, by the way, that text messages demonstrate that the neighborhood dispute Alito refers to happened *after* the upside-down flag flying.
Avatar
Exactly. It’s clear at this point he’s full of shit. Wish someone would write an article calling that out instead of letting him continue the spin. What about the flag flying proud at the other house?
Avatar
It honestly tracks that the only way he could treat a female human being with dignity and respect is on accident while trying to defend his deplorable behavior.
Avatar
Become a prominent conservative wife, take the blame for all of your husband's dickery
Avatar
She doesn’t use her uterus to fly flags so no need to control that shit.
Avatar
Alito used more careful reasoning to explain the limits of his authority re: his wife’s treason flag than he applies to SCOTUS decisions.

The idea that Alito isn't willing to tell a woman what to do is a bit of a howler
Avatar
Too bad he doesn't believe that of other women.
Avatar
Are you familiar with subtext Cameron
Avatar
Avatar
Sure; it's what they write on the side of a submarine, like 'USS Ohio' or 'Turkey and Mayo.'
Avatar
Avatar
Also didn't they open for XTC in 83?
Avatar
Avatar
I mean, walking out the door and lowering the flag was physically impossible?
Avatar
gotta give it to them “My wife is fond of flying flags. I am not.” is unfortunately #goals
Avatar
When did Alito stop believing in Originalism??
Avatar
"Look guys, I'm working literally day and night to rollback her ability to do this. It's why I even got this job, so I could one day win every argument with her by legal fiat"
Avatar
Alternatively..."Once she can no longer independently own property this will no longer be an issue"
Avatar
Well, once she told him she had conceived the idea of it, he certainly couldn't make her abort her plans, could he?
Avatar
“My wife’s reasons for flying the flag are not relevant for present purposes…” I’m takjng that to mean she’s coup friendly. Also odd that he felt the need to ask her to take the flag down if flying it doesn’t raise questions about his impartiality.
Avatar
Avatar
It's a double-bind, though, right? I mean, he could have taken the flag down, but then he'd be publicly demonstrating that he's against insurrection, and then he'd *have* to recuse himself. As it is he just has to let his wife be crazy in public. Y' know, for impartiality.
Avatar
Love that he found a way to turn a domestic disagreement into a matter of property rights. Just skipped right over freedom of speech to get there, too 😄
Avatar
If Sir Matthew Hale's wife attempted to fly her own flag, I wonder what would've happened.
Avatar
But what of the history and tradition?!
Avatar
I would have more sympathy if she flew a flag that said "Women's Rights are Human Rights." Or a Pride flag. Or a "Remember Uvalde" flag. Or just random seasonal or historical flags. Imagine if any of these flags were flying at the home of a Supreme Court Justice.
Avatar
His statement still reads as extremely misogynistic to me, just a different flavor of it.
Avatar
I want to know what he regards as the vilest epithet to a woman. My guess is "independent"
Avatar
If only he stopped at "my wife is an independent autonomous human being" and did a little bit of thinking.
Avatar
More likely he was afraid she'd kick his feeble ass.
Avatar
Sounds like a loveless marriage.

“My wife is fond of flying flags. I am not” is how I’m summarizing all of my marital disputes from now on.
Gives me hope that the Christian Nationalists won't be that bad...

In the first three drafts, he phrased it as "my wife unfortunately remains independent and autonomous, but I shall redouble my efforts to fix that."
