Honestly the “my wife is an independent autonomous human being and if she wants to fly a flag at our home I can’t and won’t stop her” is probably the most post-19th-century thing Alito has ever said.
Does he have the right to use the property as he sees fit? If she has the right to raise a flag, doesn't he have the right to lower a flag? I'm so confused
Exactly. It’s clear at this point he’s full of shit. Wish someone would write an article calling that out instead of letting him continue the spin. What about the flag flying proud at the other house?
It honestly tracks that the only way he could treat a female human being with dignity and respect is on accident while trying to defend his deplorable behavior.
"Look guys, I'm working literally day and night to rollback her ability to do this. It's why I even got this job, so I could one day win every argument with her by legal fiat"
“My wife’s reasons for flying the flag are not relevant for present purposes…” I’m takjng that to mean she’s coup friendly. Also odd that he felt the need to ask her to take the flag down if flying it doesn’t raise questions about his impartiality.
It's a double-bind, though, right? I mean, he could have taken the flag down, but then he'd be publicly demonstrating that he's against insurrection, and then he'd *have* to recuse himself.
As it is he just has to let his wife be crazy in public. Y' know, for impartiality.
Love that he found a way to turn a domestic disagreement into a matter of property rights. Just skipped right over freedom of speech to get there, too 😄
I would have more sympathy if she flew a flag that said "Women's Rights are Human Rights." Or a Pride flag. Or a "Remember Uvalde" flag. Or just random seasonal or historical flags. Imagine if any of these flags were flying at the home of a Supreme Court Justice.
