My teenaged nerd self is delighted to know that Michael Moorcock, author of the Elric novels, is not only still alive, but apparently still actively writing

It is disorienting to see what the New York Times will cover with an active voice (that is demonstrably more accurate) and what it'll obscure with passive voice.

A lot of people insist this sort of thing does not matter but it actually does matter a great deal that the NYT is willing to be so discriminatory in its use of the stylebook.

Do Palestinian lives matter less than Ukrainian ones?

I want to be clear: I am very pro-trash can. The trash can here bears no blame. I love a trash can. I also walk to my subway stop via a street with many fish restaurants. When someone says something like, "imagine how bad it smelled in medieval Europe," New Yorkers don't have to imagine that hard.

Credit where it's due though, Shtayyeh does call for an actual UN peacekeeping force to oversee the 67 territories and for elections with Jerusalemites allowed to cast ballots which is more than a lot of the ex Authority officials will say.

Shtayyeh, the former Palestinian PM, is right that the Arab Peace Initiative could end the conflict tomorrow if Israel were to accept it. But that's merely a tautological assertion, and while he hints at why Israel hasn't accepted it he doesn't actually say what the US should do to make it happen.

And of course ultimately this is something these states choose to do themselves. It is a testament to how little the Arab powers in particular cared about the revolution (obviously) that it took a little over a decade for people to accept the "permanence" of the Assad egime.
