It coming from 2022 changes the context from "someone worried about college kids being brained by pigs for not supporting genocide" to "guy whines about muh wokeness keeping him from saying the n-word."
And that's a necessary distinction to make in discussions of "free speech."
This is fucking ridiculous. The only intolerance that is rising in the country is an intolerance for hatered, racism, & the ultra wealthy. Grow the F up.
If you don't like the criticism, stop being a horrible person.
I wish that were the only intolerance rising. Transphobia, ableism, racism, they're all on the increase and documented as such.
Of course, these wankers probably mean "cis het white people were told they weren't being very nice" as a form of intolerance, don't they.
Hey, I wanted to say, & my apologies if I'm wrong about this, but I honestly believe that acceptance & understanding for trans people is actually growing. I think racism & true antisemitism in the minds of the ppl in this country are actually decreasing.
We are living in very difficult times & there is a very loud minority of ppl here who hold intolerant & hateful views. Our media is invested in the status quo & doesn't serve us well, but I still believe most ppl are decent.
Of course, I'm a boring cis het who tries to see hope in darkness.
Also as a queer disabled woman who's gone through quite a bit of hate crime, I'm pretty sure that the majority of people are ableist. The pandemic has shown just how bad it is, how willing they are to harm us and even cause our deaths.
I'm with you about the awareness & acceptance of people with disabilities, 100%.
I was talking about the USA & I do believe that hateful ppl are the minority, they're just very loud. Outside the USA rising intolerance is being fomented by the same christian fundamentalists who do it here.
I honestly don't know. Younger people are much more aware of LGBTQIA issues and more open wihh their identities, that's wonderful to see. But hate crimes are climbing steadily, and legislation across the world is targeting queer and trans people more and more.
Allowing authoritarians to rise to power is the biggest threat not just to LGBTQIA people but to everyone, that part is scary, but I still think those freaks are minority.
Also an intolerance of elite institutions toeing the line drawn by their billionaire patrons/ owners. That's a definite never again and go to hell from me :)
There's an old story that once, everyone spoke the same language, but then they had a huge fight and the Czechs stormed off with the consonants and the Tongans got all the vowels, Te Reo Maori is middle-range
😀
Maybe fifteen years ago some wag (possibly at the blog Balloon Juice) pointed out that this was basically Sarah Palin's conception of The First Amendment.
It's an interpretation that's really been catching on, Sarah Palin is clearly underrated as a Constitutional Scholar.
It's part of dude process. The right to free speech means my right to freely make you hear my speech. This SCOTUS will back me up, I'm a white cishet man
When you think about it, don’t middle school phys ed teachers have the free speech right to encourage their students to beat up that one weird kid who won’t say the Pledge of Allegiance?
If they can decide a case in favor of a coach who quit and didn't want the job back by way of ignoring a direct record of the coach conducting prohibited team prayers then who's to say what even happened
So, time to print and mail copies of that one XKCD to the NYT editorial board? Maybe in pounds and bundles?

Maybe I shouldn't expect Elon and Jack to understand what right to free speech means , as determined by the First Amendment, if @nytimes.com Editorial Board has no idea what it means.
They’re describing psychological safety, which is a privilege, not a right.
It’s great to have, and pretty essential to constructive communication, but no one owes it to anyone else.
in essence they want the right to shame or shun, (oh, let's say... trans people for a recent example), without having anyone else shame or shun them for doing it.
