It remains a bit wild to me that it's 2024 and the "home to-do list/console screen mounted on walls in your house" remains a DIY task and not something that companies will sell you out of the box with that specific use-case
Why do this? Whiteboards don't work for me because my handwriting is shit. I can only keep up with a to-do list if I can update it from my phone the moment the thought hits me. But if I can mirror a to-do list from my phone and laptop onto a always-on wall-mounted iPad in my home office...

many people are saying this
Avatar
Definitely nice, but what would someone pay for that?
Avatar
I have zero doubt a company could sell that for several hundred dollars each
Avatar
I personally would consider selling one of my children into bondage for this
Avatar
I may have to look into building this…
Avatar
I'll start a spreadsheet of pros/cons to see which of my children is going to fund your work

heard good things about this www.skylightframe.com/calendar/ but the "I have an old ipad and want to mount it" problem remains elusive afaik

Love the idea here but also have a feeling before the hardware physically dies they’ll sell to some large company and then send out a ‘we’re shutting down’ message and make the hardware useless. Been burned too many times. 😞

glad this finally exists! i last looked a few years ago and was surprised they didn't seem to. (would still prefer to just use my old ipad though)

Yeah, me too. I want the tactile/visual checklist, but I’d still never buy one of these self-contained things, even if it’s great, still feels like a scam, endless subscription services, plus when/if the startup goes bust, no more updates.
Avatar
Yeah I keep looking at them and they're way out of my price range. Plus, I'd like one that's e-ink and not an active display screen.
Avatar
This seems like a good use case for those wifi enabled refrigerators everyone is trying to sell.

Indeed, the big names (Google and Amazon, at least) keep making it more and more hostile to this by deprecating features used by third parties like Todoist.
Avatar
It's bizarre to me that so much smart home stuff is, like, "what if you could control your lights without standing up" and not stuff like this.
Avatar
this is very useful if you have a physical disability (bonus points for having it introduced as 'gimmicky' so people make fun of it) neurodivergent/spicy doesn't "count" and therefore you'll have to search even harder for it /did i get that right? i think i did
Avatar
My handwriting is terrible, but I still write a lot by hand. Not my ToDo’s tho. Because the stuff I need the lists for, is the one that changes, evolves, needs more / less subpoints, and I need to add to it via my phone (when not home). And I would love for my metronome app to be on my wall

I want a combo to-do list & calendar type of deal. I'd put one in nearly every goddamned room.
Avatar
at this point, "small tv in every room" doesn't even sound like a power bill issue? eInk would probably be most efficient, but how much can those digital picture frames be costing?
Avatar
you can buy bulk ones on amazon for not a whole lot.
Avatar
i need to spreadsheet up the cap-ex/op-ex here, on annual power bill, but u still need software to keep all the screens in sync, and
Avatar
Yes please. People who encounter my handwriting allege that I am no-handed. Which.. as a pretty skilled pianist is sort of backwards, but I take their point in that context.

An old Ipad showing Google Keep with one task list pinned would work for me. But as you say, fuck Google.
Avatar
(i.e. I have an old iPad kicking around. I guess tablets are cheap. Are Kindle Fires rootable?)
Avatar
The excuse is probably just “everyone has a smartphone now, so just use your smartphone.”
Avatar
Only use keep atm(yes google) Coz, it's quick, on phone and always with me I do have a tab mounted on wall tho, but that's home assistant and meater Squirrel mind🤔🤷
Avatar
Quite like the case, methinks there are ipad versions
Avatar
Digital wall calendar/ organizers are a thing, but they’re kinda expensive and I don’t know if they have to do lists.
Avatar
isn't that arguably the fetch samsung/lg is trying to make happen with those monstrosity "smart" fridges

Avatar
Ah, just saw your thread. I just traded in my old iPad for a new one (only got a $30 rebate since my screen had white spots I guess?) but I really wanted to keep it as a wall mounted screen that could like show the next subway arrival time. Or something else like that.
Avatar
we use a to do list app on an old tablet for our menus and grocery list.
Avatar
Because then these won’t be luxuries for the rich that can show them off if the proles get them too
Avatar
i am about 93% sure i know someone who did exactly this
Avatar
I think there should be a way to do it with a Google device (the Nest Hub maybe?).
Avatar
yeah but on the other hand, fuck google

It is, however, up near the peak of "DIY" in the upthread conditions.
Avatar
True. I was primarily responding to give an easy alternate for people wanting a DIY that avoids the Google ecosystem. IFTTT has an active sharing community, so there are a lot of off-the-shelf IFTTT solutions.
Avatar
Have heard good things about IFTTT!

Dakboard is basically just a monitor you hang on your wall instead of an e-paper display, but it's also primarily making money off the premium web subscription. So if you wanted to you could just make it your TVs home page, or run it on a pi.
Avatar
Ironic because that’s a major type of “hello world” example app that most tutorials/manuals give you to learn new programming languages.
