like, it’s pretty clear that some of what’s driving all of this is biden’s unwillingness to tell donors that they’re not like the other aristocrats

no one believes in the myth of meritocracy more than the american who thinks they are different than every other american born on third base

this is a poster’s instinct, not a politician’s, but it would be extremely funny if biden shot back at big dem donors by saying that they are just afraid he’s going to increase their taxes (and i think for a subset of them, this is genuinely true)

Trump’s public schedule showed that on most days, he worked (“worked”), like three hours a day. And this isn’t even a “Biden can’t work late at night” issue. It’s a Biden is pulling back on SCHEDULED EVENTS that start after 8pm, which is actually a good idea for most people.

i don’t actually know this, this isn’t a rhetorical question, but, like, do other representative democracies expect that their heads of state maintain 14-16 hour a day, 7 day a week schedules, or is that just specific to our national obsession with looking busy?

i wonder if biden having a closet full of identical suits arranged by day to minimize the cognitive load he felt he had to contend with would kick off another round of biden old and unfit discourse

Obama kinda famously kept a pretty regular 9 to 5ish schedule and was known to get upset when it was disrupted by staff.

i also think about how lincoln was famously up at all hours and had a wildly unpredictable schedule and how the last photos of him look like a man who would not have survived another term even if booth had never been born

it’s neither here nor there as far as a trait to be emulated, but i always think about how joffre was unfailingly militant about his dining and sleep schedule, even during the great retreat, which would (and should!) have spooked the shit out of any normal commander

my hot take is that the president should be and live like a normal human, and so I reject the premise that the president must work 130 hour weeks and never be well-rested. he has dozens of staffers who can cover shifts!

anyway, i don’t know what biden should do about the campaign. no one else does, either. but there’s not been enough discussion about whether powering through, bad press be damned, could also work, even though that has worked for him many, many times in his long political career.

This is broadly what's been happening to gender affirmation treatments and other trans issues and is led by the same elite media

1. elite media finds a herd issue 2. elected dems (usually backbenchers) read the columns about it 3. columnists know electeds are reading, write more columns 4. panic sets in 5. columnists want to keep the panic going >>> you are here 6. electeds do something fatally stupid

there’s not enough consensus in congress at the moment to make any of them give up their vacation time, so writing columns about the invading hoards of caravans isn’t going to give you a lot of traction for the next month

it’s a circular firing problem, because the dems described here — probably not the majority of electeds, but definitely not a small group — are the ones who live and die by the latest elite media column.

I see this problem with some rank and file Dems too. It's like they conflate Trump loyalists with undecideds and think the undecideds can't be moved by reminding them how awful Trump is. Which is why many of these Dems are so obsessed with replacing Biden with a magical Johnny Unbeatable now.

many of you are pointing out that it shouldn’t matter, that it’s important even if MAGA base doesn’t care, that there are people other than them who should know this, and i’m sorry to inform you that none of you will ever be given a major column in a newspaper or magazine with that kind of thinking.

one of the most cowardly arguments i keep seeing from columnists is that nothing breaks through with trump supporters, so it’s a waste of time reporting on what he believes. this should be seen as a critically damning failure on behalf of the fourth estate. this means you failed. it’s not a pass.

2 of the top 3 candidates for the US presidency have shown a repeated willingness to believe any conspiracy dangled in front of them like a set of keys, including wildly anti-american ones, which are straightforward cognitive deficiencies for what we should demand in a president. neither are biden.

i mean, he means he won’t take sides on the “theory” of whether the US government did 9/11 or not, but that doesn’t make this any less insane

The President of the Untied States should take sides on 9/11. Foreign terrorists killing nearly 3,000 Americans is one of those things an American leader should take sides on.

I once wandered in there during the Stripping and it scarred me in ways I cannot describe. I , taught from birth to fear the sun when it is VERY FUCKING HOT OUTSIDE was forever changed by this. They are strange, these people of this exotic land. A proud, tribal, quaint people. But oh so strange.
