It's amazing that some corporate leaders are willing to support Trump for tax cuts and deregulation while shrugging about what Trump's threats to wreck democracy and the rule of law would do to the business climate. 1/ New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1831...
Trump’s Shameless, Corrupt Wooing of Plutocrats Is Suddenly Backfiringnewrepublic.com A media narrative has somehow taken hold that CEOs are stampeding toward Trump. The full story isn’t nearly so simple.
Avatar
WH chief of staff Jeff Zients tells me he and other admin officials are making an expansive case to CEOs that a good business climate depends on stability and the rule of law. He talked to me about the case he made to the Business Roundtable recently. 2/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...
Avatar
Former American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault has been privately arguing to executives that stability and the rule of law matter. Notable: Chenault tells me some execs respond that they don't think 1/6 can happen again! Astonishing head-in-the-sand stuff. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...

In recent days, a few billionaires endorsed Trump. Then he shocked the Business Roundtable with his incoherence. Jeffrey Sonenfeld said CEOs see Trump's economic plans as potentially disastrous. It now looks like the idea of a big shift is overstated. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...
Avatar
To put this plainly, at least some corporate leaders seem to be supporting Trump precisely because he's offering them a corrupt oligarchy in which they get a juicy cut of the spoils. Still, the bigger story here is that there is no stampede to Trump. 5/5 newrepublic.com/article/1831...

Capitalism requires democracy but capitalists love them some fascism.
Avatar
Capitalism benefits from democracy, but doesn't require it; capitalists only require a system that doesn't take too much of their money, so they're able to accumulate more of it, and preferably lets them use it to influence policy.
Avatar
Oh definitely. Greedy as they are, though, maybe not all are fully into the potentially messy outcomes involved with loot, pillage & burn

This experiment has already been tried in real time in post-Soviet Russia, and while a few have made out like bandits, it's not sustainable.

Yet again, education that lacks lessons in history, civics and basic business/social responsibility shines thru. A shocking example that all business execs should see/study: unsold Tesla's. Consumers (aka voters) are NOT stupid! youtu.be/ldruOGMSubs?...

One of the big attractions the US has had (not as true today) is a stable system of government. We have changes AND the system is mostly stable. tfg wants to upend the system and install his whimsical vindictive self in its place with any spoils returned as tribute... or gratuities.
Avatar
In Roberts Court terms, corrupt gratuities aren’t bribes & some corporate leaders are like, “Cool, let’s roll with that.”
Avatar
Apparently, the CEO’s who believe that fascism is good for business never studied while in school. What the hell are the Ivy leagues teaching these days?
Avatar
And if dems were smart we would make this a wedge between the evil wannabe Russian oligarchs and the other oligarchs
Avatar
Do they care if a 1/6 happens at all? Because their response to the first one has been back the instigator to the hilt. Former CEO is as useful as a former Republican.
Avatar
No reasoning more motivated than that of a billionaire looking at tax cuts and stock buybacks.
Avatar
Shoshana Zuboff points out how hard it was for people to comprehend totalitarianism. I feel that here in the USA we are struggling to comprehend what is happening in politics and society:--
Avatar
We will all pay for their greed and ignorance of history if trump wins.
Avatar
Many of them will pay too, they just don’t realize it yet or think they will be the chosen sons. Idiots.
Avatar
At least someone in there Gets It and is Arguing For It...
Avatar
That’s in part because as a Black man, Chenault has never been as ignorant and privileged as his white counterparts.
Avatar
I wish Kenneth would say which CEO’s
Avatar
Correct. It will be on a different day. And it will be much much worse.
Avatar
This is only astounding if you have respect for CEOs. And if you do, honestly, that's probably your fault.
Avatar
Corporations rode out fascism before, they think they’ll do it again.
Avatar
Is "Ffederal Rreserve" a typo or a dog whistle? Because it sounds like some Qanon nonsense.
Avatar
I'd love to know which CEOs have poor enough judgment to believe that January 6 proved the guardrails are sturdy.
Avatar
Avatar
Yeah: trick me once, fie on you; trick me twice, fie on me and sell your stock.
Avatar
The guardrails are cracked & broken when the Court & Congress are led by people willing to turn a blind-eye to a convicted liar, fraud, cheat, rapist and indicted insurrectionist. History will perhaps one day answer “Why?”
Avatar
His stated deportation policies would cripple the economy and drive inflation through the roof!
Avatar
It's less amazing if you know some of these "leaders", sociopaths to a man
Avatar
I'm unsure amazement has any part left to play in political observation and commentary.
Avatar
It's because these businesses don't care about being maximally successful and profitable. Inflicting mass poverty on Americans increases their relative wealth far more than increasing their own marginal wealth.
Avatar
Avatar
Corporate greed trumps morality. What did my broker say? I don't like the guy but he was good for the market. Talk about suffering from amnesia.
Avatar
It's almost like many business leaders have no vision 😉
Avatar
Avatar
What’s amazing about it? Corporate leaders in Italy in the 1920s and in Germany in the 1930s also didn’t care much for democracy.
Avatar
I do not know how fervently these corporate leaders have to support Trump for such news to be mundane and not at all amazing. Adelson had one request for Trump: to tone it down. He refused, and she promptly showered $10 million on him. They are not unaware, they just do not care.
Avatar
Well, they are stupid, greedy, and shortsighted. So there’s that.
Avatar
John Ganz made a point that privately held companies, hedge funds and other investors are fine with Trump’s incoherence, and ceos of publicly held companies are the ones mostly saying they won’t support his presidential run. Do you find that to be the case?
Avatar
Billionaires: "Did doing business with authoritarians work for those people?"
Avatar
the billionaires of Nazi Germany remained so after.
Avatar
In an autocracy where the rule of law is whatever an ignorant, mentally unstable dictator-in-chief says that it is, how long do they think that they'll be able to ride the tiger for corporate profits before it turns on them? I suggest they look at the fates of Russian oligarchs for that answer.
Avatar
I'm starting to think that many corporate leaders are giant dummies who sell well and think good salesmanship is true wisdom and intelligence.
Avatar
It's what it has always been about - GREED; free money and harm to us. The more the better for CORPS, the worse for us. Corps no longer care about the customer is always right, customer service, customer satisfaction, quality, getting a good deal, low prices/... 1
Avatar
Their money exempts them from such pedestrian and bourgeoisie things like democracy and the law, which they subvert and/or bend with money. Just look at the SCOTUS & the senators and House Reps, who through contributions, stall all legislation aimed toward helping the great unwashed masses.
Avatar
Go figure. Sort of like why affluent voters in Westchester came out in droves for Latimer. Nice liberals like money.

This article is a reminder that we really need to pull back power from the billionaire class.
