Never quite finished this: 1/2
Whiter shade of whale
Went and danced last night with Queequeg
You can call me Ishmael
Got our drinks with Starbucks
Then we hoisted up the sails
I went to see the captain
Was the strangest I could find
Had a leg was missing
been tangled in a line
Asked him what we're hunting
And he looked up from his ale
with his face at first just twisted
said "A whiter shade of whale"

Argh, the "Whiter Shade of Whale" was meant to be separated by a blank line, and "Starbuck" isn't supposed to have the "s" at the end but my fingers know how to spell the coffee vendor.

Cuz the whalers gonna whale!
(whale x 4)
But I know they’re gonna fail!
(fail x 5)
Cuz im gonna catch their trail!
(trail X 4)
Gonna break ‘em up! Break ‘em up!
I see a crazy man nailing up a coin
Captain Sir, Captain Sir, will we really have whale pelt?
Look, his eyes are frightening, really are enlightening me!
Grab a spear now,
Grab a spear now,
Grab a spear and let's away
Oh what a day, ayyy ayyyy ayyyy ayyyyy
Call me Ishmaael, I'm the story-teller. 😁
Here he comes, white as snow, he's not letting go!
And no! He is not letting go!
Let him go!
Oh, Ahab, he is not letting go,
let him go!
Oh, Ahab, please just let him go!
Let him go!
Oh, Ahab, he would not let him go!
Would not let him go!
Would not let him, would not let him goooooooo! 😁
I think that might be the only song that can handle an infodump of that magnitude. Of course, I consider it more "classic rock" than "pop" as a general rule, but I guess at one point it was pop?
I'm still coming to terms with Nirvana being considered "classic rock" ... in other news, 1993 was not "10 years ago," but I think it wants its stuff back anyway. 🤣
I see so little spoken of Cetology
Linnaeus, Linnaeus will you separate whale from fish?
Sharks and shad and herring, all very generically

Exactly. There's a whole debate mid-book about what type of creature a whale is. The current scientific taxonomy didn't develop until after Moby Dick was written.
And Melville had his own opinions on the subject, too; in the unabridged edition there's a snarky footnote aimed at people who wish to categorize pinnipeds within the same group as whales.
You are making me need to go read that glorious novel yet again. How that thing was published I do not know, but in the year of our Lord 2023, it's beautiful.
Used to be you could devote your life to an existentially-empty revenge hunt of a mindless beast, projecting malice on it to try and make life seem less random and chaotic. But you can't do that anymore. Because of woke.
