I don’t think it’s even that. It’s a mistake to call them intelligent, artificial or otherwise. Sophistry requires an intent to manipulate, and these algorithms are incapable of intent.
I'm not entirely decrying any utility in acquiring one; making it through the process and still feeling it something you should announce to the world does however make me suspect of one's broader wisdom!
schooling doesn’t give wisdom, tho it can give knowledge. wisdom is knowing how and when to use that knowledge and that seems to be partly inborn and partly life experience. 🌸

My god, it’s almost like you have to… prove you’re competent to a group of profs to get a doctorate, and academia is full of people, who fuck up sometimes so hard that entire departments are dysfunctional in a large chunk of academia, which is also *not* the case in a large chunk of academia!

It is sad that this person doesn't know that a PhD is not a measure of intelligence. It is a knowledge accomplishment. It is a measure of what they have learned. While they often do go hand-in-hand, there is no one-to-one correlation.
