imagine how much great art could have been created if we took a fraction of the money spent on getting computers to make shitty art and gave it to actual artists
Avatar
unfortunately we only treat art as having a financial value when it’s enriching someone other than artists
Avatar
right now much of the financial value in art is captured by the delivery mechanisms, which are the parts of the equation that have arguably gotten cheaper. meanwhile the share that goes to artists has dwindled & the generative people want to crush it even further
Avatar
this all popped off a little! I don’t have anything to promote but if this resonated then please, if you have the money to do so, support your local creators

By generous application of their riches, the Medicis and others fostered and sustained the Renaissance. Today's tech barons, wealthier by orders of magnitude, are fixated on building automated Etch-a-Sketches.
Avatar
They are building theft machines. They are building machines that reroute irregular droplets of income from artists to a firehose of cash to libertarian billionaires.

When computers use a fuckton of water and energy to make a picture of Homer farting a cloud in the shape of a pot leaf.

I saw ppl posting how much they pay for the plagiarism tools and I was like man, you could get a nice custom commission or two per month for that money.

It's so fckng weird that tech bros want to automate creative jobs, leaving humans to perform boring repetitive ones.
Avatar
right? like why focus on the jobs that quite a lot of people can do and more importantly *want* to do
Avatar
Ironically generative AI can be a great replacement for CEO jobs.

The fact that they can automate art, but not JIRA tells you that it's not about the work, but about who is deemed deserving. Each layer in society profits from the layer below, and protects the layer above.

Texas is subsidizing 10 billion dollars for new fossil fuel power plants specifically because of AI data centers. Imagine if they just subsidized artists and journalists and other workers instead. What a world that would be :(
Avatar
Artists would certainly use less power and create less greenhouse gases.

I went to the Whitney this spring and one of the exhibits was computer art and I couldn’t get out of that fast enough. It was so uninteresting and I was appalled they included it.
Avatar
but how will we means test it how can we be certain that they will spend that money on their craft and not food or housing how can we quantify the value of the output with the possibility of rescinding grants (we live in hell)
Avatar
it was never about art it has always been about having more of [intangible currency number] than those around you
Avatar
sprinkle a little of that sweet arms race money in there too

reminds me of me frequently saying imagine how much innovation and progress we could potentially make if we put a fraction of oil R&D funding into green energy R&D 🥲
Avatar
Pfft. That's inefficient, Luddite thinking. With LLMs, we get to: 1) Spend shitloads of money, 2) Destroy the planet, AND 3) Get shitty art That's THREE for one, and capitalism has taught me that's ALWAYS a good deal.
Avatar
Wait, wait, FOUR for one--I forgot about getting to cope with some of the most insufferably entitled techbro dickheads in history.

And free electricity for everyone

One day when AI dies, all of It’s ‘art’ will still be soulless garbage. 500 years after AI dies, all of It’s ‘art’ will still be soulless garbage. 2000 years after AI dies, all of It’s ‘art’ will be the focus of three different religions.

yes, eating would be nice occasionally 😐

Capitalize on Content and Control It is the TV dinner of art— and not even the satisfying kind.

Also who thought in the modern world “there aren’t enough things to look at”
Avatar
Honestly... Probably a lot less than the crappy AIs occasionally generate.
Avatar
Yes, but also think of all the wonderfully polished literary translations we could have if we paid translators a decent wage instead of copy-pasting all our text into Google Translate. I hate to break this to you, but everybody values fast and cheap results over quality they have to pay for.
Avatar
Except that these tools give artists more power to express ourselves.

I’m guessing the power costs alone devoted to generative AI activities could fund the National Endowment of the Arts.
