just saw the phrase “a simple ChatGPT prompt shows that” and I think I felt something audibly pop in my brain

There are some fitness subreddits where these gullible fucks constantly post stuff like "so I asked chatgpt to make a workout routine and diet for me" and it's always the most pathetically nonsensical shit you've ever heard of.

I was working as an analyst one time and the client asked us to do something that i didn't know how to (and neither did the senior consultants) My manager asked chatgpt and pasted it to me with that mountain of text that never gets anywhere

there are many uses for that technology but search is LITERALLY THE FUCKING LAST ONE People just trying to slap their old boring ideas onto the scary unknown, as usual

call me old fashioned but if you’re going to have “AI” involved in search then maybe it could, I don’t know, assess search results for validity and relevance and sort them accordingly, instead of making them up

Exactly :P I’ve worked building the predecessors to this language model tech since like 2012. Same math, new parlor trick And they aren’t hard to ground if you do it right. I was doing it for medical devices in accessibility, no fucking way would hallucinations be acceptable

What are we other than a generator of sequences of words, that can fine-tune itself, has some input data streams connected to empirical data, and has some context windows to generate in (all of which are something we can integrate together).

Sure we are still more successful examples of that, right now, but how far off do you think even that is? Though that's not really the point, because if all we're doing is extending our own actions and cognition, then we don't need something that does it all. Now do we?

Yup, my personal experience in this is someone insisting that you could cause false positives in PCR covid tests with kiwifruit (wrong) and was quoting AI bullshit as evidence. Mind you they just generally didn't believe PCR could detect viruses, so were ripe for confirmation bias.

The best part is when these nonsense arguments get scraped off the internet and fed back into the plagiarism machine, making it worse! We currently have no answer to this!

I'm writing my master's thesis on the seperation of ethics and rhetoric in higher education and its possible implications on modern discourse. I have to use "possible" because there's no direct line but I really wish I could just finish the paper by shrugging and looking around helplessly.
