Both Lincoln and Grant built towering reputations for Mexico — Lincoln opposed the Mexican-American War, and both men supported the Liberals in the fight against the French imperial occupation, from political and financial support to furnishing arms and materiel, while the Liberals saw the /
Union fight for slavery as twin to their own struggles (just as Northern Americans were generally sympathetic to Mexican and European revolutionaries).
Yeah, it was an interesting time. Matías Romero was a young Liberal diplomat in DC at the time, and he developed close ties to the Radical Republicans thanks to their political affinities. There’s a fascinating book, Schoonover’s “Mexican Lobby,” which reprints many of his contemporary communiques.
"Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions. We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times." wwnorton.com/college/hist...
Keep in mind Lincoln was a rail-splitter (that is, he split big pieces of wood for a living) and a successful wrestler when he was young. Therefore, we need a statue of a buff Lincoln beating the shit out of someone representing a slaver. It would be historically accurate.
