Patents and innovation, dogs, skiing, skiing dogs? Also Michigan - go blue!
Avatar
Huh. Yeah. The others look raw (though maybe just haven’t flipped yet?) but that is a grill mark peeking out if you look closely, isn’t it.

How about skiing the Streif?

The middle isn’t a main controller, it’s a separate sear burner. (Grill is a Genesis II E-330 or similar.) You still don’t put cheese on raw meat, but the grill is most likely on.

If only you could edit it.

Good luck, residents of Springfield IL. Invest in earplugs.
Trillions of cicadas are about to emerge in the Midwest and the South. Two different broods of the ~extremely loud ~ insects are set to crawl out of the ground together for the first time since 1803. See where they’ll appear on this map:

Super great and healthy that the discussion about protecting Americans from being digitally impersonated is being driven and dominated entirely by entertainment industry lobbyists!

It's that time again - donate for refugees, and for spite towards your college's hated opponent(s). This year? A dime for every day it's been since Ohio State beat the 2023 NATIONAL CHAMPION MICHIGAN WOLVERINES.

Once a year a weird collection of college football fans on the Internet come together to raise an absolute ton of money for refugees in the ATL area. Donate for spite, and because your school is better than that other one, and oh yeah because it helps people who need it.

I'm looking for a very specific type of scholar: A historian who uses computational text analysis methods - ideally word embeddings or later methods, who works in an actual history department, who publishes in history outlets, who resides in North America. #DH help?

This is why I only take edits in redlines that I enter into my own master document. No one can be trusted with my styles.

If you're interested in IP and AI - especially ownership of outputs - can I recommend you tune in tomorrow morning to the Hous Judiciary IP Subcommittee hearing where I will be testifying on exactly that topic?

I used to walk home from elementary/middle school when it was nice out. It was a one mile walk with a decent chunk along a dirt road with no sidewalks. And it was fine! I just don't get the people who think kids can't be alone for five seconds, much less a twenty minute walk.

It hasn't popped up on RECAP yet, but our newest filing at the 11th Circuit is up. It's pretty important! The government moved to dismiss our appeal, telling the 11th Circuit that it was now moot because the affidavit had been unsealed. One problem: it remains sealed! USCA11 Case: 23-13649 Doc 26

TIL: someone tried to steal the color formula for Oreo’s cream filling “Beyond the color, the cream was protected by a patent for its composition, granted in 1987. Food scientist Sam Porcello invented the cream’s smooth texture with aeration and mixing it to a gravity between .70 and .82.”

Whaaaat? I love this, definitely adding it to my IP survey course as a trade secret/patent example.

My polling place is my kid's school, so I am very very aware tomorrow is the primary because they don't have school as a result.

My union (as an adjunct) is SEIU, I think you just go with whoever at this point. (Also AAUP hasn't done collective bargaining for very long, and they're still weirdly organized where each individual chapter is on its own.)

OK so. Fortress has a fund that is specifically dedicated to funding patent litigation. Most notably, they fund VLSI, which has been going after Intel for a few years now. But also they funded Labrador Diagnostics, who sued BioFire over diagnostic tests. www.patentprogress.org/2020/03/pate...
Avatar
After it was reported that Labrador was including BioFire's COVID testing in what it accused of infringement, Labrador claimed it would drop that part of the case (though I don't recall if that actually happened, there was reason to think it might not be meaningful, as I explained in the post.)
Avatar
In the meantime, VLSI has filed something like 10 lawsuits against Intel, at last count. In one of them, they walked away from the case when they thought they might have to disclose who their funders were (speculation is that it's because some of the funders are foreign sovereign wealth funds.)
Avatar
There's ALSO some fun history, in that VLSI's firm (Irell) is also the Trump PTO Director's old firm, and some of the policies he put in place during that time benefited VLSI by preventing Intel from seeking review of those patents. (Someone else did. They were largely invalidated.)

ANOTHER one of their subs has been trying to get a decent chunk of the handset market banned from import, and I'm sure there's others I'm blanking on right this second.
Avatar
Oh right I forgot the best/worst part. The patents that Labrador asserted against BioFire were old Theranos patents that Fortress had scooped up as part of their loan to Theranos during the winddown.
