why are protein bars all sweet? i need more protein (for purposes of walking 5 hours a day for fun without dying) but they're all grossly sweet. can't we make some kind of like pizza hot pocket-like thing that doesn't need microwaving
Avatar
(i know there's jerky but I'm vegetarian so that's out haha)

Oh wait this recipe uses the oven haha oops. I just microwave them 30 seconds at a time until they're dehydrated and crispy and golden
Avatar
i eat dairy cheese just fine, so I'll definitely look into this!
Avatar
they're one of my fave energy snacks for sure! And I feel better about eating straight up cheese because I can wipe away and discard the excess oil that leaks out while it cooks

Are eggs an option for vegetarians?
Avatar
they are for me, but I don't have a good way to cook them unfortunately
Avatar
I just scramble them, but I'm boring.

Oh, then you could give this recipe a try.
Avatar
You can hard-boil them in an electric kettle if you're careful. Very portable that way too.
Avatar
Honestly, you can make scrambled eggs in the microwave, and I do so if I don't feel like washing a pan. It had never even occurred to me that you could do that, but Alan Rickman casually mentioned in an interview once that he'd eat scrambled eggs he'd made in a microwave, so, yeah, it's an option.
Avatar
Get a Sistema egg cooker for the microwave. When I worked in an office I would make eggs in these all the time and take them with me. Might have to fiddle to find the perfect timing but it works great.

We found a mushroom jerky that I was super interested in a while back. There's some protein in those, for sure, but I wonder how it tastes!
Avatar
hmmm yeah I'm skeptical but I'd definitely try it haha
Avatar
(although I doubt mushroom jerky has a lot of protein, either)
Avatar
Avatar
Can confirm that the mushroom jerky is actually pretty solid in terms of taste and texture. Almost no nutritional value of course, but the real problem is they're bonkers pricy here. Like, $8-10 for a dorito bag's worth of them here

I saw someone suggested an egg boiling appliance, I heartily recommend an instapot. They're not over rated. You can do a perfect egg in there, you can do potatoes and corn and black beans, curry, and you can even saute things. Apparently you can make cake?!
Avatar
if you make a choice against what you want that's on you jerky is the answer to your question
Avatar
There is vegetarian jerky out there but holy salt! I absolutely love this stuff, but 14 g of protein to 483 mg salt just doesn't work out for me.
Avatar
muting this because people are starting to recommend just random vegetarian foods and I really just wanted something hefty that I can stash in my purse and eat in 2 seconds haha
Avatar
Avatar
interesting! I've never seen them at the grocery store but I'd give it a shot for sure
Avatar
where is the spaghetti flavor
Avatar
I think about this all the time. I have an anti sweet tooth
Avatar
I stumbled upon a savory bbq granola bar once, and said "I'm adventurous! I'll try it!" The experience was like eating kibble for humans. I feel like we can do this, but we haven't cracked the code yet
Avatar
Avatar
> savory bbq granola bar If there was a Japanese version of that - it might be awesome.
Avatar
Hmm yeah good point. I guess the sweetness helps cover up the taste of too much protein they put into them?? I’d like a savory vegetarian option too
Avatar
Yeah exactly! Funny that I just saw this 😅 bsky.app/profile/pent...
Sick of overly sweet protein powders, got some unflavoured stuff. I'd now like to formally apologise to the good folks who overly sweeten protein powders to save us from this.
Avatar
I'm trying out these dried edamame snacks that are savory and pretty good.
Avatar
YES. Give me savory bars, because I'm too lazy to make my own pemmican, and that's still kinds sweet anyhow.
Avatar
Since eggs were brought up earlier I'm gonna die on my Dash egg cooker hill. It's super convenient and I use it all the time so I don't have to use the stove.
Avatar
I like Lara Bars. Plant-based, less sugar. Few ingredients.
Avatar
I've had those! they're still definitely on the sweet side of things though (unless they've made new flavors recently haha)
Avatar
Yeah, I guess 'less sugar' is relative..
Avatar
Nature Valley has a new savory line of granola bars.
Avatar
Sugar is an anti-microbial agent and preservative as well as a sweetener, which really helps for shelf stability in packaged bars.
Avatar
Most protein bars don't have actual sugar in them. Or if they do it's like one gram.
Avatar
Any sugar, not just table sugar - agave syrup, honey, even the alcohol sugars like maltitol and xylitol.
Avatar
i want the convenience of protein bars and chicken nuggets without them giving me diabetes and high blood pressure.

Pure Protein also makes a Protein Puff that’s pretty indistinguishable from an actual Cheeto! Otherwise, I’m thinking I’ll need to cook up some pea soup protein nature brick out of unflavored pea protein, sun dried tomatoes, and nooch. Godspeed 🫡 www.pureprotein.com/collections/...
