I'm working on starting an email newsletter for Survey 160. The newsletter will, at irregular frequency, have updates on internal methodological research we want to share, product updates, and job listings. What are qualities you find most valuable in newsletters from companies (not substacks)?

Also, deep fried pork belly certainly had it's moment in the mid aughts in culinary culture. Also phenomenal in hong shao rou, Chinese "red braised" pork belly using dark soy

It's uncured, unsmoked pork belly?

Trump continues to benefit from the very strange norm among journalists that "if it's said in public, it's not a scandal." How much more space has the "Biden is old" story been given than Trump's promise to jail his political opponents? www.nytimes.com/2024/07/01/u...
Trump Amplifies Calls to Jail Top Elected Officials, Invokes Military Tribunalswww.nytimes.com A post that Mr. Trump circulated on Sunday called for Liz Cheney to be prosecuted by a military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals.

Yes, I'm posting a NYTimes link. They did cover the story. The question isn't "what gets covered", it's "how much coverage does it get"

So where's the UK general election polling accuracy discourse?

Given Donald Trump's track record of lying, which is well documented, long, and also recent, it is a disservice to readers to repeat Trump's statements without extensive caveating like "Trump claims he has no idea who is behind it". (This is not primarily criticism of the article here to be clear)

These fools just love an absolute monarchy

It says a lot about the right wing's political project that they have as a speaker a deposed would-be monarch (the last son of the Shah of Iran) who wants to restore the Iranian monarchy. (Note: this is in no way of an endorsement of the awful people who did the deposing).

I realize he has said some nice things about democracy, which is lovely, but created a self-styled government-in-exile that puts him at the top, and calls himself a crown prince.

Loving these quotes from Iranians explaining their vote. CC: Americans who think there’s little difference between Biden and Trump.

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

Weird* how he didn’t call for such punishment for those who violently stormed the seat of American government to try to stop the Constitutionally mandated transfer of power after a free and fair election *weird, but not surprising
I think this is the first time Musk has suggested fellow Americans should be executed.

The great thing about America today is that you don’t get punished, much less executed, for failing to support the policy initiatives of political leaders. Maybe Musk has been spending too much time hanging out with the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party

It's a shame to see so many people who claim to be pro-democracy rapidly get on board with forcing out a candidate who has now won two primaries and one general election. But that's clearly the direction we're headed.

Donald Trump is now arguing that former presidents should enjoy lifelong immunity from criminal prosecution even for crimes committed after leaving office
Donald Trump's lawyers on Friday asked the judge overseeing his classified documents case to put that proceeding almost entirely on hold as they sort through whether Trump enjoys immunity from the charges based on a landmark Supreme Court ruling this week.

This — Project 2025, the Supreme Court’s legalistic usurpation of power, and Trump’s current rhetoric on the campaign trail — can only be understood as an attack on our Constitutional government itself, less violent means than those used in Jan 6 but no less threatening to our democratic republic

If you have ever sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution, you should be thinking carefully about what that oath requires now. I cannot see how support for those openly threatening the constitutional system squares with solemn obligation

All monarchies are inherently illegitimate and as such monarchical titles should be ignored by civilized society
