Also from the article: Subject to the terms of this Agreement, You hereby grant to HP a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free right to use, copy, store, transmit, modify, create derivative works of and display Your non-personal data for its business purposes. The what now!?
HP wants you to pay up to $36/month to rent a printer that it monitorsarstechnica.com "Never own a printer again."
Avatar
It also says that HP may “transfer information about you to advertising partners” so that they can "recognize your devices," perform targeted advertising, and, potentially, "combine information about you with information from other companies in data sharing cooperatives" that HP participates in. 🫠

Not going to buy any HP printer ever again.

To use up the ink you buy to send advertising you don't want.

just more ignorant parasite class c-suite monsters deciding they should receive money without providing ANYTHING OF VALUE 'here's a "printer" but it's not a printer as much as a data extraction device intended to make us money at your expense, go fuck yourself'

Hewlett-Packard used to mean a company that made some damn nice devices that worked well, lasted, and were nice to use (I've got an HP12C calculator, as one such example). But they've eaten away at that rep to the point it was trash... and then they decide to up the ante and go full-on trash.
Avatar
From a company to an abomination. Late late stage capitalism
Avatar
They've been garbage since the Compaq merger and have been getting intentionally worse for awhile now.
Avatar
Avatar
Yeah, read your TOS. You now have to pay $5/month to enable your “=“ button.
Avatar
Not disputing your point, but the HP Prime is the best calculator they've made in decades. Expensive, tho.
Avatar
The 12C was pretty expensive for its day too. I'm glad to hear the company does still know how to make something good.
Avatar
I meant to look this up earlier. The 12C listed at $150 in 1981! ($411 today) They must have come down fast for me to have one by 1986.
Avatar
OTOH, I saved on batteries. I don't use it a lot, so I'm on my second or third set. Don't remember which, but after 40 years that's not too onerous. 😀
Avatar
Definitely. I have a 28 from college, and my problem is the battery door is missing. 😢

I didn’t think it was possible to find new ways to hate printers, but here we are

I will horribly neglect mine for like, a year or two, start it up again, it jams off and on for maybe a day but then is back up running full speed like the toner never even took a break. It's amazing.
Avatar
Yeah, one of the best things about toner vs. ink is that toner isn't a liquid, so it can't dry out. It just lasts and lasts and lasts. The trade-off is that, if you spill some, you need to remember to wash using cold water, because heat can fuse it to whatever it was spilled on.
Avatar
Yeah I'll stop using my brother laser from 2007 when they stop making toner for it and not a moment before
Avatar
Like every sane person with normal needs, I have that Brother printer and it’s completely adequate. 👍
Avatar
Literally just bought a brother laser color printer and it’s the best
Avatar
yep that's my sweet baby too
Avatar
Two things: -$36/month is a lot of money. You can buy a decent printer for less than $500 and it will last more than 2 years -why would anyone agree to a printer that transmits your documents back to HP? Most of what people print is financial documents
Avatar
hp just sold a shit ton of brother printers if you can do without color for your day-to-day, you can get a brother b&w laser printer for less than $200. in 4 yrs I've bought 2 toner carts because they print forever b4 running out & they don't phone home if I need color I just go to the library
Avatar
I have the brother small business printer with color. 9 yo and still going strong
Avatar
I have an incredible workhorse printer that I can’t use anymore because there are no compatible drivers with my laptop. It’s so frustrating. I use one at the library now, but I have one I can’t use at home
Avatar
Dang. Which printer is this? (This is just begging me to ask, does it fail even on Linux?)
Avatar
Samsung ML-1630. It’s about 10 years old and it’s amazing. I can’t figure the Linux thing out myself but that’s a good thing to ask friends, thank you for the suggestion
Avatar
You could ask a friend to make a bootable USB (live cd) for you, and you can always just login to linix for the print (might be less hassle than walking to the library every time)
Avatar
Thank you so much! This is great
Avatar
good idea, I'll mail a fedora liveusb soon as i can get a good usb here.
Avatar
I have a 15 year old Brother Laserjet that is still going strong and will almost certainly be rejected at some point by my Mac and I'm going to be so angry when that happens
Avatar
The proverbial loaded gun for unexpected noises comes out
Avatar
Most of what I print are kids colouring sheets on my trusty Brother. I almost kinda wish I had an HP one to mess with their ad profile algo, although I don't really want to see amazon affiliate links and facebook ads for colouring books everywhere I go.
Avatar
yeah I am hung up on the rental price; a few months and you could buy a decent printer outright. then again, there exist furniture rental places that charge high prices because the Vimes Boots Theory is a thing
Avatar
$36 is 200 b&w pages or 65 color pages at Staples. Pretty hard to find a home user with those kind of needs. Plus the cost of ink for home.
Avatar
Brother single function laser printers FTW. Get the one that doesn't even have a network interface.
Avatar
yep. I get them from my recycling connections all the time. they cost me next to nothing, I think I paid maybe 10 bucks for this one and only because it weighed 30 pounds
lol lmao even
Avatar
Oh my god how do I become like you. I HATE my printer but I refuse to buy a new one because I don't generally set my money on fire for fun.
Avatar
I'm a reseller and buy stuff by the pound and refurbish everything / flip it. printers are a exception where I pull out good brother/hp/lexmark lasers with low page counts or new consumables, and give them to people or local organizations so they don't waste money on inkjet garbage
Avatar
It's a really good service to the world IMO, you are keeping so much e waste from being e waste
Avatar
I don't suppose you're in driving distance of Connecticut and want to sell me something 😬
Avatar
unfortunately I'm around 800 miles from there and across the border
