This is really difficult. I live in NYC and there's so much to do and see. I'll narrow down to two things: I love the NY Botanical Garden on a weekday in the Spring. And Sunday at Grand Bazaar [though it's become sooooo crowded and popular now]
Let's have some fun on Bluesky tonight! Tell me where you live and one thing everyone should do in your city! #flythefriendlysky

“Every $1,300 New York invested in building bike-lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to 1 additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.” Bike-lanes are a sound public health investment. www.reuters.com/article/busi...

My friend @mehr.nz and colleagues have a fun new online game that is also part of a public science research study. I suspect more than half of you all can beat my 50th percentile on music. Can more than a sixth of you beat my 86th percentile on color?
check out our newest citizen-science experiment, Tone Guesser! 🎶🧪🧠 this game, led by @courtneybhilton.bsky.social, taps your visual and auditory perception to test your intuitions for how color tones and music tones fit together. can you beat my score? try it at themusiclab.org/quizzes/toneguesser

Just had to look up who that is. Ug. What a bummer cause I really enjoyed the fifth risk. Also I liked learned about “raccoon” in different languages this morning much better than what I am learning now!🤣

Thanks for the info. Now I see your point

Oh no...I'll have to go look that up! I never read the Blind Side, is that the same as the movie? (which to be fair, I also didn't watch!) If I find another good source of info I'll pass it along. I imagine the nuts and bolts can't be much different than he describes.

I'd say yes. It wasn't perfect, but it did a good job of getting into the weeds about a few government agencies I realized while reading it I didn't actually know a lot about (if I remember correctly Agriculture, Commerce and Energy, maybe another...). It was also a really accessible, easy read

I came away with a much larger appreciation for all the people that have worked/work on the myriad of details that keep our country functioning that I think we all take for granted. Also shows how much expertise and ethics matter....I'll leave it at that.

you know what, everyone should just take a minute and go watch Casablanca. Have you seen it? It's pretty good. You'll finally get all the references.

Did you read "the fifth risk"? I remember learning about the guy from accuweather wanting to privatize it and also how much amazing work is done that you don't think about that is saving lives (storm prediction!!!) Is this that same guy?!

It's because they want to privatize weather. They tried doing it under his last administration but many people didn't really notice beyond the weird hurricane drawing he did. It's also why they cut (or at least tried to it's been a minute since I read that stuff) a bunch of NASA Earth's funding too
They have such winning ideas like “why don’t we charge people who want to know if that tornado is gonna hit their house.”

Next time you see someone quote Audre Lorde's 'master's tools' at you, ask them 2 questions: 1. Can you please define what YOU think the master's tools are currently? 2. What else does she say in that essay?

Not just farmers attend state fairs. In most states they are widely attended by all (in my experience)

Today: 2-year anniversary of open heart surgery to repair my almost completely non-functional mitral valve. I am so grateful to medical staff here at UW who cared for me, and feel fortunate that I had access to that care. Heart surgery is as near to a technological miracle as anything I know of.

Secretarybird vs lappet-faced vulture!!! I just got back from a reporting trip to the Masai Mara. These were two of the birds I most wanted to see and never did I imagine I’d see one kicking the other in its lappety face. (Also, hello. Get ready for a month of Kenyan wildlife pics.)

What happens to a largely US-controlled internet after fascism? I'm hoping we don't find out, but do these now, not later: - Make sure that you have ways to contact your core groups outside of social media. - Back up everything you don't want to lose online.

Why would they be when we are currently ignoring high levels of Covid as though it were nothing and there has been only “no risk at all” messaging!?

Interesting! In article I just read (in Spanish so translation could be less clear) it said Procyon comes from a greek word meaning “before the dog” Thank you for this fun/fascinating start to the day!
Avatar
Yes! Adopted from a náhuatl word meaning essentially “one with hands” But I did also learn today you can say “lavador” meaning “ washer or washing” and be technically correct BUT I have never read or heard that used in practice.
Avatar
1- Same! 2-I was like why is Spanish so different!? (mapache) Spanish word came from náhuatl word meaning “one with hands” 4- “washing bear” is b/c Carlos Linnaeus “father of taxonomy” thought they were in the evolutionary chain with bears and named them “Ursus lotor” (washing bear)
Avatar
So interesting! In Spanish I have grown up using “mapache” (never heard another word before today) Doing some quick reading it comes from a náhuatl word meaning essentially “one with hands” BUT turns out (I just learned) it is also possible to say “lavador” meaning “washing or washer” and that 1/2
