To me the difference is RBG had a cancer diagnosis and a window of many years in which it was a good time to arrange an orderly transition. The window for Biden to retire closed 4-1/2 years ago.

Those panicking had no information about the prevalence or the severity of the bugs, so their views are not relevant to any serious discussion about resource allocation. There were many critical systems affected, and having a great many ordinary systems fail simultaneously is a big problem too.

it’s exhausting to have to point this out every time the Y2K bug is brought up, but hey: it didn’t do as much damage as was feared because *lots of people worked very hard to raise awareness, prepare, and fix it*

I remember the time I tried to log into Gnome desktop with a configured-but-nonfunctional DNS resolver. (“Why is it trying to resolve the local machine name?”) And in XP, Explorer.exe would get the urge to freshen up all the mapped network drives when you opened the “Save as” dialog.

I did that once. I listed all the symptoms and the tests I had performed, but avoided making any explicit conclusions. The rep (Dell) listen patiently to the whole thing and said: “Well, it sounds like you have a bad hard drive. Let’s confirm the address to send the replacement under warranty…”
