I’ve been up to something really exciting in recent months—launching a worker-run local news outlet in DC!! News cooperatives are a bright spot in a bleak media (and everything?) landscape & we need them more than ever. Read about our crowdfunding launch in The Washington Post t.co/R1s2UOmJfO
Former DCist staff launch the 51st, new local news site for Washingtont.co The 51st is a worker-run newsroom that will attempt to fill a niche its founders say opened when WAMU closed DCist.

Want to mask but lack resources? Look up a local covid action group. They provide free masks, often including sampler packs to help you find the n95-type mask for your specific needs! Size, shape, hair texture, sensory needs, etc matter. So does normalizing masking to resist bans. Mask in public.

It might help to get through to nativists + xenophobes who put stock in bloodlines but it still creeps me out. My mom’s mom used to brag about us supposedly being related to John Adams (or was it Sam Adams?) on the maternal side in order to distract from her father being Mexican and pass for white
Avatar
She did really extensive genealogical research and was even head of a genealogical society but somehow only found the time to study one branch of the family tree And least the Adams boys seem to have been anti-slavery, I guess

Reminder: any resident of Texas can get a FREE digital library card from the Houston Public Library system. Only $40/year for non-Texas folks! Their Libby hold lines tend to be long but you can have up to 15 holds. If your local library system is limited, check it out: houstonlibrary.org/mylink
If you want access to free books, please get a library card. In the US, the more people there are with library cards, the more funding libraries have access to. Libraries provide more than books. They are a community resource. As an author and reader, I support libraries! #books #libraries

My hunch is, the through line between the different interpretations is a belief that innocence has been contaminated. It’s about repelling perceived threats from out-groups and maintaining the purity of the in-group, with children serving as a kind of disputed territory
Avatar
TERFs believe that “social contagion” can brainwash children into believing they’re trans. Christian fundamentalists believe queer ppl are inherently sexual at all times so if children are aware we exist, that defiles their purity. Stranger-danger means that predators lurk outside, never inside
Avatar
Also explains imo why the right so often turns a blind eye to CSA within institutions and families: it’s maintaining a hierarchy, not introducing foreign contamination
Avatar
For some it’s literal, as in QAnon/blood libel and its watered-down forms like # savethechildren. For others it’s about watering down the term so it can be weaponized against anyone perceived as a threat to Christian Nationalist orthodoxy, eg LGBTQ rights, feminism, reproductive rights
Avatar
Eg “Grooming” is a specific process in which an adult assumes a position of trust and authority in a child’s life so they can gain access to the victim and avoid accountability afterwards, but far right ideology applies the term to anything from adults being out to rainbows on kid’s clothing
Avatar
It’s intended to conflate completely innocent activities with the most horrific CSE, and it loses all meaning. I suspect that even amongst themselves, reactionaries aren’t sure what the hypothetical victims are being groomed for: Gender affirming care? satanic ritual abuse? Sex trafficking? Atheism?

Fomenting panic on the U.S.-Mexico border has created, not just a massive surveillance infrastructure, but also billions of dollars for technology vendors. @eff.org has compiled a public dataset of companies that are selling equipment to the DHS.

If you need help pitching an oped you can email me lollardfish at gmail and I will help. I will do it for free because I think more experts, writing and accessible ways for the public is a fundamental good.
Junior Scholars: Project 2025 is now breaking through to public consciousness. The more people learn about it, the more they hate it. Now is a great time to search that website, go to the section of your expertise, and write an oped. Keep the drip of bad news for them coming, all the way to Nov.

+1. Publicly reaching out to strangers on Xitter was a core function of my last job, so getting yelled at OBO my corporate overlords was just accepted as an occupational hazard. Otoh Bsky isn’t a professional tool so I don’t have to worry about blocking too many ppl and missing something important

One of the big issues here: the channels journalists use to speak with sources are often driven by sources. You want them to feel comfortable, so you accommodate. This is a good example of why it's also important to nudge people to use safer channels before speaking. www.usenix.org/conference/u...

I stopped using but a few months ago I realized I’d completely fallen out of touch with so many people that I don’t see on a regular basis. I logged in for the first time in three years and…crickets. Hardly anyone still there, and the feed is just lowest common denominator garbage

Strangely, while FB’s feed acts like it never met me, my IG feed is uncannily accurate. It even gave me ads for my own engagement ring. I wonder why Meta hasn’t figured out how to use a similar algorithm on FB

The way I see it is this--if people want to boycott the NYT, then I am all for it. If people want to harass a black person for taking money from the NYT for op-eds where they haven't once altered their views for money or power, I'm going to look at them funny.
