what's everyone's favorite non-city Sim game. i always loved sim copter, being able to fly around a city you made was so neat. i had simearth as a kid but could barely understand it and am also i feel like one of three people to ever play simisle (not good)

when you got a computer in the 90s you would just acquire a lot of random cd roms because computers always came in these insane bundles so you'd get like three lesser known Sim games, Hello Kitty-themed productivity software, a demo for an FMV game with Bob Hoskins, etc

fanbyte murked all my retro computing pieces so i guess i'm going to start reuploading them to my personal site

rip jazz jackrabbit. you lived in these demo bundles

rip epic pinball, "super android" was a fun table and I was never even slightly tempted to go past the demo

Jazz jackrabbit 1 and one must fall 2097 are like the two games we upgraded from shareware

As a kid in the 90s whose parents refused to buy consoles I played everyone one of these games: Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall 2099, Rise of the Triad, Wacky Wheels, Commander Keen, Jill of the Jungle, Hugo’s House of Horrors

🫡 to the first three levels of Jill of the Jungle and her insane climbing animation

growing up with an SNES all of these freeware PC platformers always seemed so jank to me, though i did play a lot of them at my uncle's house
Avatar
I have the opposite scenario, where I only had PC games growing up so all the "foundational" SNES games are things I've never actually played
Avatar
they should make a gritty fps remake of crystal caves imho
Avatar
Opposite; I couldn't see how anyone could stand the 'fuzzy' console graphics on a TV. The pixels on Captain Comic were so crisp in comparison

Cinemania 96 changed my gd life

Music central 96 unironically significantly expanded my musical horizons as a 9 year old

Microsoft Bob, uh... was Microsoft Bob

he walked so alexa could misunderstand my every comment

spent so much time in my shitty postmodern house with a million decorations clicking Scuzz the mouse

i honestly really did love Bob, it was a terrible idea but as a kid my sister and i just loved making our little rooms and messing around with stuff

I had Streets of Sim City and it fucking sucked ass!!!!

Who needs Doom when you've got a shareware demo of Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold

My parents' Pentium 66 came with a multimedia CD that gave step by step animated instruction on how to fold different types of paper airplanes, with spoken audio. I drove back from college to witness this wonder.
Avatar
I bought a boxed set of Doom, Doom 2, and a tonne of homebrew levels, except the Doom CD turned out to inexplicably be an Englebert Humperdinck album instead.
Avatar
I once got a copy of King's Quest V that came bundled with 10 empty cd cases
Avatar
especially if you had grandparents in the UK and they sent you those computer magazines with the cd-roms on the front
Avatar
I loved magazines as a kid and the ones from the UK were a kind of holy grail because of how high quality and rare they were, if you found an imported one it was usually over $12 in 1990s money
Avatar
They also taught me foundational British slang
Avatar
I got this beast of a compilation free with a sound card, of all things
Avatar
reminded of "War Planets" strategy game that came with some toy when I was a kid and apparently looked like a proto-starcraft
Avatar
is this specifically Maxim Sims games or just anything in the Simulation genre? Simants for the snes is pretty fire
Avatar
i think our second gateway computer came with some 3d pinball game, a claymation point and click adventure game of some kind, and cd that had a bunch of dilbert themed minigames

the Earthworm Jim team made this! too bad Doug TenNapel went off the deep end...

I was a huge fan of SimAnt conducting a war for the lawn was the closest I could get to conquest as a child whose parents did not like violent video games
Avatar
I had SimAnt but never really figured out how to get my ants to do what I wanted, though...
Avatar
I use to play the “Let’s see how fast we can drive the humans out of the house” mini game. Also liked Sim Earth.

That music is my eternal ear worm

I remember feeling horror and shock when spiders and other ant armies were chewing my poor ants up.
Avatar
Forcing people to evacuate their home because your ant armada took over was a great feeling
Avatar
No modern horror game has replicated the terror of a spider stretching over half of the screen sprinting onto your display
Avatar
Loved SimAnt. Its manual (first half game manual, back half ant facts) is my all time second favourite (pipped only by Arcanum.) Better dead than red!/Better red than dead!
