In 2006, Senator George Allen’s re-election campaign in Virginia tanked when he was caught calling a South Asian man “macaca” — and that was a slur most people hadn’t even heard before. If it had been the N-word? My God.

it seems to me that in the 1990s or early 2000s a revelation that a presidential candidate casually threw the n word around to describe Black people would mark the end of their campaign.

I mean, Trump has said many things that would normally have ended his political career. If he began using such words now, there'd be an initial shock, but his core supporters in the GOP we be, "Well, finally. It's about time we get to say '****** ****** ******.'"
