Before the ACA: we got a call from a social worker looking for an adoptive family with good health coverage for a baby whose 2 working parents could not afford the surgery she needed for her heart defect. They didn’t want to give up their 3rd child. We said sorry, because we had coverage w a cap.

NICU doctors told me that pre-ACA, complicated babies would max out their LIFETIME caps before their first breath of fresh air outside the hospital. Our kid’s 96-day stay came to $1.3 million. Add in the follow-ups, and it’s easy to see how fast a kid could hit a $2M or $3M cap.

There are some sounds which are hard to approximate if your native language doesn’t have them and you try for the first time as an adult (English has two rare sounds in the form of dental fricativas, or the th sounds, which many non-native speakers struggle with). But doing your best shows you care.

I think Americans in particular think you can diffuse the tension if you apologize in advance for messing up but I really think making a sincere attempt and if you just can’t form some sounds totally correctly take your cue from the person (can they live with your attempt or do they want a nickname)

One of the things Democrats really need to avoid assuming is that people remember what insurance was like pre-ACA. New voters have no idea about declinable preexisting conditions, which so many of us (myself included) have.

When officials say wear a mask “when appropriate” or “if you personally feel you are at risk,” it has the opposite effect and stigmatizes mask wearing. The best way to encourage mask wearing is to say that it’s a good idea for ANYONE wear a mask at ANY TIME.

Even with all of the push back, I think we are still greatly *underestimating* the damage that this current "AI" tech is doing. We were actually doing a respectable job of cataloging human knowledge and making it accessible to people. Now we are actively polluting it and making it useless.

Fucking fuck Google to the fucking moon and back. I searched for a Scientific American article and got an AI summary that had an error in almost every single sentence, starting with the date being off by a decade.
