But... but this makes no sense. It's like capitalists have never wanted to pay people a living wage... I can't figure it out. Something is askew. There must be something missing - something out of context. WHY WOULD CAPITALISTS UNDERVALUE WORKERS? I'm just so... so confused.

Several of the Confederate states were quite explicit when seceding that "Our economy depends on African workers who are much better at farming in this climate than white workers. But this would be unsustainable if we had to actually PAY them more than white workers, so we just won't."

(And even though it's agricultural, it's still capitalism - borrowing money from bankers to buy stolen land and enslaved workers and paying it back with surplus labor value - even before you get to cotton gins, railroads, and export markets for the products.)

I bet every single one of the people saying this were/are highly punchable nobody ever "wanted to work", everybody wants to live with dignity and feel accomplished in some way. When work fails to provide dignity and a sense of accomplishment, the only sane way to relate to it is with resentment

That's not a defense of capitalism, that's more like a scathing critique of it. The fact that you are coerced away from your kids to produce value on the threat that failure to do so will result in you and your family being homeless is absurd and terrifying.

And the reality is that pretty much every human wants to be a helping member of their community (i.e. they like to work). Being jobless, or "idle", carries a stigma in most societies. If someone "doesn't want to work" there's a high probably they're being exploited by someone else.
