Imagine playing this with the turns spiraling out of a dot-matrix printer interface instead of a monitor working off a mainframe.
We played it on teletypes with acoustic phone modems. (But we were interactive with the campus mainframe!)
(So the printers weren't as advanced as dot-matrix)
It was only possible to suck at that game
The physics of it was fun though
God, I loved "Joust" so much. I was terrible at it, but it was such a bonkers premise!

I worked at a pool snack bar with a Joust machine. Had the keys to the quarter box and was allowed to refeed it. I got so good.
I was running MAME for a long time for basically three games:
Robotron
Joust
Tempest
That was the cadence of my early teenage years.

Joust was awesome, but where I really shone was Dig Dug. Inflating adversaries till the explode is the way.
I had a summer job that required me to get good on Robotron. I had blisters on my knuckles.

It was a video game company in the 1980s and we were porting the game to a console cartridge. We needed to get good enough to see all of the gameplay.
Dope-ass freakin' game. The dual joysticks were perfect for this game.

I think that's Raiders of the Lost Arc, but they could have recycled that for an Emperor's New Groove game.

Williams would be able to buy microsoft and apple if they made a Joust mass role playing game.
Joust now seems oddly prescient for those controls. It would take decades before ordinary PC software would replicate that “press a button, give it a sec, something might happen” gameplay.
I’d put a quarter down that says otherwise…
