I once wrote a fact check of a Morgan Spurlock book. He included what he said was a direct quote from the FDA that aspartame causes cancer. I checked the footnote. An FDA newsletter did publish that claim — but *only to specifically refute it*. That’s basically how Barrett quotes Madison here.
These mistakes originalist justices are making aren’t about disputed interpretations of history, with evidence on both sides. They’re pulling quotes out of context to attribute ideas to founding figures that those figures adamantly opposed. (via @andycraig.bsky.social) reason.com/volokh/2024/...
The Supreme Court's Dubious Use of History in Department of State v. Munozreason.com Justice Amy Coney Barrett's majority opinion includes significant errors, and violates some of her own precepts against excessive reliance on questionable history.

From firsthand experience: lot of local “nonprofits” are Christian-based & discriminate against disabled, BIPOC, single parents, Queer folks, & non/wrong Christians. They pressure people to covert & go to their church. State-handled means less discrimination & religious violence against the poor.

I’ve made this point broadly but it also applies to newspapers and the teevee. The New York Times is a pristine example of how embracing transphobia as a guiding ethos inevitably leads to embracing fascism.
It can’t be repeated enough: transphobia is a warning sign for fascism. The rights of trans people are a canary in the mine, and when they’re assaulted it means we are all under assault.

“Some folks need killing, It’s time for somebody to say it. It’s not a matter of vengeance. It’s not a matter of being mean or spiteful. It’s a matter of necessity!” the republicans are attempting to goad their followers to terrorism against their perceived enemies. This is what fascism looks like.
MAGA Gov Candidate’s Ugly, Hateful Rant: “Some Folks Need Killing!”newrepublic.com Mark Robinson, the GOP nominee for governor in North Carolina, has a long history of incendiary comments. But he may have topped himself this time.

Robinson positions himself as a truth teller against "wicked people doing wicked things, torturing and murdering and raping" and that "some folks just need killing." There could not be a more explicit call to commit violence against perceived enemies "because we have forgotten who we are."
Avatar
You see how Robinson invokes an *actual* war (WWII) to establish that this is, in fact, a "war" with combatants (who are the fellow citizens of the warriors he's inciting). He claims they are trying to make 1776 (i.e. the Christian founding) a "distant memory": newrepublic.com/article/1834...

I've written for years about the Christian right's calls for "spiritual warfare" against demonic enemies of Christian America. They used to claim their struggle is against "powers and principalities" not "flesh and blood," citing Ephesians 6:12. But it was still dangerous. Now we see how.
One striking detail in this story: The Pastor at Lake Church, where Mark Robinson gave this speech, told me he and Robinson expected these remarks to be "scrutinized." Then the Pastor defended them! (also worth noting Christian Nationalist overtones in rest of speech cc @sarahposner.bsky.social)

The state of Minnesota still has a Virginia confederate battle flag from Gettysburg. Virginia asks for it back from time to time and Mn says to fuck off - winners keepers. Ventura was much more animated about it. Anyway - it still sits locked away in Minnesota.

today is the 161st anniversary of pickett’s charge, when 12,000 confederates marched across 3/4 of a mile of open land, directly into constant rifle and artillery fire. half the confederates were killed, wounded, or captured in the slaughter, a turning point in the battle of gettysburg and the war
I think we could all use a bit of pick-me-up right about now, so seeing as it's July 3rd, why don't we once again reflect on one of the greatest white supremacist self-owns in military history:

Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

life under authoritarian regimes is like war: most Americans don’t know that it’s often really normal and boring, up until the rarer, horrible moments when it isn’t
